Bat-born eloping
for their sabbath carried
by the spells of moonlight spilled,
potions in their eyes
star-drunk on rose-water
women shedding decency
with silver skin exposed
and their violent violins.
Lust-lured
they are leaving life behind
for a dark demonic dance
with what’s rotting,
dead deceased,
for the perjury
of a youthful past.
You may mistake
their season
for the windborn clouds
and the wailing wind,
but the morning after
you will see it
if you dare
to gaze into their eyes

Today Sanaa hosts dVerse with a prompt where we chose among thirteen different songs for Halloween. My choice was to use the Lana del Rey song that I also used as title of my poem.
October 13, 2026
This is deliciously dark and alluring, Bjorn! I especially love; “potions in their eyes/star-drunk on rose-water.” 🙂
Thank you so much for writing to the prompt ❤️❤️
It was a pleasure writing for the prompt
I enjoyed your season of the witch, Björn, especially these lines:
‘star-drunk on rose-water
women shedding decency
with silver skin exposed
and their violent violins’
– amazing use of alliteration throughout!
Thank you so much… I enjoy alliteration
Me too!
Beautiful, but frightening painting. Seeing their unholy cavorting gives me goosebumps. Your poem shows just how threatening these acts are to their well-being.
The painting I think is a lot of fantasy in more than one aspect.
Bravo
Much love
Thank you
Opens with such powerful alliterations…each stanza a different exploration, plunging in the 2nd and the ironic, sardonic end.
In-between the philosophy of for the perjury
of a youthful past grabbed me, and still does…stunning.
It was a lot of fun writing…. so much to grab from those old myths
The alliteration and those lines about being ‘star-drunk on rose-water’ are absolute perfection. Pairing that dramatic art with such vivid verse sets the ultimate Halloween mood.
Ha… yes we are entering darker times.
Bat-born eloping is my favorite poem opening today. Lust-lured is also quite entertaining.
So fun to do compound words
I love how the first sounds of each verse make this bold! Jae
Thank you… so much to do with sounds
The seductive sounds of alluring alliteration, works so wonderfully well here, Björn 👏
Alliteration is fun to play with

Full of atmosphere and dark romanticism – it feels reminiscent of classic Decadent poetry mixed with gothic modern fantasy. You balance beauty and menace so well 🙌
I find the mixture of benign and menacing quite beutiful
This is wonderfully dark and foreboding, Björn. What a great piece! Beware the Season of the Witch!
Thank you… I love to write darkness (with some humor)
I agree with Sanaa…But the image I love the most is the spilled moonlight..and the perfect ending.
Thank you, I really wanted to tie it together… it is scary to think about looking for witches in normal women…
They are there, believe me. As well as in “normal?” men.
Very atmospheric, very dark and I loved your compound words and alliteration. And of course the finale was stunning!
It was a while since we did compound words… might be my next prompt.
That sounds great! Merril is so good at them.
I couldn’t comment earlier. WP gremlins in full force!
I love the alliteration and all the movement in the poem. I had seen this painting while looking for one for mine. Your words fit it perfectly!
The painting was a real gem… (I saw it was categorised as kitch which makes it even funnier)
😊
Such “perjury of a youthful past”! May your devout Christian commenter have a wet whoopie on the sheets imagining dem witches back of their cave. And get a “wailing wind” from the 3d eye of the oldest hag in the brew …
They where a hot bunch indeed
The spilled moonlight began the haunting of this poem. Love that first stanza!
