Eclipsed sunset

Yesterday,
the Moon-shadowed
sun hid to blacken the woods
eclipsing as the birds muted;
grass turned from green into grey
a visit from midnight
before he was due
and as the sun-sickle
tried to break free
from the shackles of Moon
with the world in its tension,
shrouded and veiled
as in mourning, we gasped
until at last
the sun was released
from sickle to full
allowed to finally set
in a cushion of clouds
tangerine pink
pretending at last
that the Moon never was there.

Today Sanaa hosts dVerse Open Link where we can link up any poem we want. Yesterday we had a solar eclipse and for once it wasn’t cloudy. We got till about 80% cover and it was an amazing experience we could see from our windows. My poem takes a few liberties as it wasn’t that dramatic.

  1. This is exquisitely drawn, Bjorn! I especially love; “until at last the sun was released from sickle to full allowed to finally set in a cushion of clouds tangerine pink.” ❤️❤️

An eclipse is such a rare sight!

  2. Here in my part of the UK, we got about 93% coverage. It wasn’t as dramatic as the total eclipse we had in 1999, but that one happened in the middle of the day, so the contrast between eclipse and no eclipse was more obvious. Still enjoyable though!

‘Sun-sickle’ is a great portmanteau! I’m keeping that one in my memory banks.

  3. Well you had a much better view than here which was at about 9%. Your poem captures the magic of the eclipse. Love the imagery that the woven colors create.

  4. Delightful write on the eclipse. I like the way the sun regained its dignity at the end, pretending the moon hadn’t been there. Nice touch!

  5. wow. I am so sad I couldn’t see the eclipse yesterday here because of the cloudy weather… I tried but no luck… But luckily I could experience it through your poem.

  6. until at last
    the sun was released
    from sickle to full

It would have been fun to witness live such happenings, Bjorn! Lucky you!

  7. It was great to hear you read this today. It sounds like it was still an amazing experience. I love “sun-sickle,” and the personification of the sun and moon here.

We saw a partial eclipse here a few years ago, but the clouds came in, and we didn’t see much. I was amazed at how dark it got though.
