Specter slain

Our righteous riots rooted out
the rot of vile, the cancer of
society vice, greed and pride,
replacing gloom with glow.
We are brightness, warmth
your future let us lead you,
coax you, rule you, save you
from the evils, we have slain.

We didn’t know it then, when
we victorious had won the war
that deep inside the seed of
darkness waited, growing from
suspicion, envy, fear, so again
the specter that we fought,
walks beside us grows so what
once we fought is now

ourselves.

Today Punam hosts at dVerse with a prompt on good and evil and mostly how it exists within ourselves.

  1. There is always that seed of darkness inside, just waiting to grow and become all that we hated before. It never ends. Love the cycle of our lives, the entwining of good and evil, both the cause and effect, always interacting and impacting our lives.

  2. The illustration for your poem is truly gruesome, Björn, and fits it well! You’ve used some serious imagery and I love the alliteration in ‘righteous riots rooted out the rot’ and ‘replacing gloom with glow’. The seed of darkness is frightening and ominous.

  3. If there weren’t injustices there wouldn’t be revolutions, but revolutions are led by men and men lose sight of ideals once they find themselves with power. It’s not the ideals that are wrong, just men.

  4. Björn,
I love the artistry here, as if a mural is being painted of the natural consequence of ignoring that rampaging “specter,” the evil within.

  5. Oh yes, this has shades of Orwell’s, “Animal Farm” in it, but with an important difference, that of self-awareness. The pigs had none. Excellent poem that sings with truth.

  6. Isn’t that just the fog of life chasing its tail. Round and round it goes, ending up in the same place — just a little less enchanted each time. But the round and round is the energy that sustains life. So we are just captured on this carousel of life my friend. 🙂✌🏼❤️

  7. How easy it can be to think we have mastered good and in our confidence miss the signs of how off track we really are.
This second stanza is a wow.

  8. I.e. after we
have put them in their right place
then treat them like a cousin?
    In other words again
Show them that we are boss?
    Nice write, Bjorn
