From duvet-warmth entangled,
boisterous dawn enters
to tickle our toes;
pulling the bed-sheets, spilling
heartless daylight,
harsher than snowfall in April
on our middle-aged bodies;
exposing pale flesh,
wrinkled and sad
exposing the smudges and stains
the night had graciously covered;
turning away, I mutter good-
morning, but meaning good-
bye, and leave for a meeting
I never will have.

This sounds like a harsh awakening in the cold light of day!
oh I love that “heartless daylight,
harsher than snowfall in April” which is mirrored in the ending
“exposing the smudges and stains the night had graciously covered;”.. wow! Such a gorgeous rendering of the prompt, Bjorn! ❤️❤️
harsher than snowfall in April for years I have been mocked for mentioning this, not so eloquently..but friends in Estonia, including a Swedish immigrant found it humorous that I felt such a temperament, so it is with some justification I read your lines…lines with that sharp, sharp edge I have come to recognise but never expect, for they do pounce. A very good read.
You cut right to the heart of it Bjorn.
Wowza. This be hard, BR. Bravo.
You struck the bullseye bang on. You crushed the prompt. Your close is killer, and your build up is flawless. So sad, so true.
I liked daylight as heartless and spilling.
Love those “smudges and stains”
Heart-strings pulled on this one!
I enjoyed this. There’s a humor to this rude awakening
I love the ending! Nights are definitely gentler on appearances.
Just break my heart why don’t you. The turn at the end is devastating.
” I mutter good-
morning, but meaning good-
bye, ”
Wow!! these words cut deep and eounding
Much💜love
One of those moments where chemistry doesn’t quite work as it should, and the recipe fails us. Perfectly etched and the emotions, or lack, ring out loud and clear. Some dawns *should* see lovers part.
This was a refreshing read, Bjorn. One doesn’t think of “middle-aged bodies” with the aubade part but why not. Not really my worry though, I am older still. (When I tell my age, if I do, people say to me, “you sure don’t look that old.)
..
“the night had graciously covered” as it so often does.
