Elder bloom

“White elder blossom and dog roses hung in the hedges, blank as unwritten paper, and the hot empty road reflected Sunday’s waste and indifference. High sulky summer sucked me towards it” (As I walked out one Midsummer morning by Laurie Lee)

Its blank flower is the palest of vellum
Stretched to a scent of twilight reminder
In patience of elders — sulky invaders.
I’m waiting for poems to bleed in laburnum.

A single quatrain written for Laura’s prompt on dVerse where she inspires with both the poems and some prose written by Laurie Lee.

  1. The scent of elder stretched like vellum is masterful, Bjorn.
I had to look laburnum up. Like the helleborus, all parts of the laburnum are toxic. I wonder if that plays into the bleeding trees?
