My love is not…

My love for you
is not like petals, soft and frail
it’s not nocturnal
like the attar-scented lips of youth
No,my love is not the rose’s bloom.

My love for you
is not like prickly daggers
drawing morning blood,
it’s not like claws of wicked words
No, my love is not the rose’s thorns.

My love for you
is upright, standing strong against
the winter storm, my love may sometimes
bend but never, never it will break.
My love for you is like the rose’s stem.

  1. This is an innovative use of the rose as trope.. I like the construction with the negative statements followed by the declaration. Great conclusion.

  2. Dude! That is beautiful and creative. I had no idea where you were going with the rhetoric until you landed at the stem, and it’s just so darned sensible and poetic. I’m jealous that I didn’t think of it first.

  3. Yes, Bjorn, I feel standing tall for your mate should come with ones love. Still I’m old fashioned and do like the mushy stuff as well. The rose flower is a flower of love, long stemmed are the most desirable. You nat have hit on reasons for their allegorical place.
