Eternal evermore I may one day
find peace forever if just I pray,
God is graceful — that’s your belief
his hands show mercy from this grief
I have for parting with this land, though
joy today is better lived before I go.
I have difficulties finding solace in a life in the afterlife, better live a life as well as I can.

Really nice post
“joy today is better lived today before I go”
I’m reminded of the phrase, much more uneloquent than yours, “you can’t take it with you.” The words “your belief” focus the reader to your voice here. Thanks for joining in…..looking forward to lots more ABCs today 🙂
Better safe than sound 🙂
I love this “joy today is better lived.” Yes!
Yes, like the free lunch, there is no pie in the sky 🙂
Reads like a prayer. I love your last line!!!
Oh, a rhyme scheme – pile on the challenges, why don’t you? I love that ending, and the enjambment is classy.
At one point I thought about doing it in pentameter… but I was a bit late.
Nice line: “his hands show mercy from this grief”
Love this prayer…quite sincere in that you’re asking for some last minute joy ….love it!
A little touch of Zorba in this; not full blown hedonism, but joyful living in the Now. Your rhyme scheme does class up the challenge.
Joy now! Yay!
Marvelously said! Two thumbs up for being joyful while you can be.
Love this…yes, find joy in the life today…isn’t that truly the gift you are given.
And you used a rhyme scheme as well! I also believe in living in the moment but I also believe in the hereafter. I look forward to that time of peace.
Lovely poem.
Someone once said “there are no pockets in coffins”, Bjorn. Be happy!
Love the last line! Yes, find joy here and now!
I can’t argue with this. Sometimes I wish I could really believe this.
What a shame to die without ever having lived.
Love the last line.
we really don’t know what tomorrow of the after life will be, so I agree, let’s live with joy and tell those people who bring us joy that they did just that.
I love the personal touch, clever last two lines…
A great note to self– make the most of every day for as long as you can!
A great line, Bjorn: ‘joy today is better lived before I go’.

Parting on a good note is most ideal. Great close Bjorn!

Beautiful piece.
May JOY find you!
Regardless of belief, this life is amazing and not to be wasted. A thoughtful piece, Bjorn.
Yes, joy today is better lived!
I agree. Live the best we can while we can.
