Voices are transmissions as
your dreams rekindle
loss of contacts over parsec-chasms,
your closest friend,
your lovers and regrets
are nearer in your sleep.
The ocean far below collects
collective thoughts,
controls you and presents
the difference between what’s real
and what’s reality.
You are at mercy of Solaris,
a satellite to alien minds,
your brain is us,
your thoughts
a ripple not a tide
as we decide illusions of
your independent mind.
We are us, and
you are we.
Today Izy presents us with Soviet sci-fi posters at toads. The only Soviet Sci-Fi Move I ever watched was Solaris, directed by Andrei Tarkovsky, and based on a novel by Stanislav Lem. We discussed the movie from a philosophic point of view, as it clearly is about borders blurring between reality and dreams. Maybe even challenging Descartes: “Cogito ergo sum”.

Love the phrase: “the difference between what’s real
and what’s reality.” They *should* be the same…but certainly not if you watch any “reality” TV!
Maybe they are not…
Yes. I felt that sense of the collective too in the world of Solaris. That was the hinge, but the actual key to such a world is quite another matter. Identity seems not to be an option.
The concept of identity was the reason we watched the movie, we also saw the movie Kaspar Hauser… also one to recommend.
Oh wow, Bjorn…this is deep – thick with a knowing wisdom – tone is pitch perfect. I love this part among many:
“your brain is us,
your thoughts
a ripple not a tide”
So cool!
Ha.. yes having studied the movie and the book many years it has stuck with me..
I can see why…intriguing. 🙂
since you manage a consistent quality and spontaneity to your poems assume you get transmission direct from Solaris – great interpretation
Ha.. I do not have a brain the size of an ocean… but maybe it comes from computer clouds… (which could be like Solaris).
I didn’t know it was a movie – cool.
your brain is us,
your thoughts
a ripple not a tide
as we decide illusions of
your independent mind…. chilling, just as the book is.
I’m glad I captured the sense of the book… after all it was almost 30 years since I read it.
For me, sci-fi is a bit eerie. So much we don’t know. When I was a kid (eons ago) Flash Gordon was the big futuristic TV series. Now we’ve more or less left poor Flash in the ozone layer.
Ha.. yes I remember Flash Gordon… and a couple of other… Solaris was something quite different.
“controls you and present
the difference between what’s real
and what’s reality.”
I feel this whenever I see commercials for the plethora of nonsense that passes as “reality” television these days. So many do not “cogito” anymore, allowing themselves to be spoon fed this garbage. And we wonder why common sense is not so common anymore.
I had not even thought of that reality… but maybe it makes sense… a little bit of bread and circuses.
So often we give up who were are to collective identity. Today reality is a orchestrated manipulation of truth. I guess I should pinch myself to see if I am still here. Great write!
I think it’s true, though not my thought it does make sense
I love the visual this brings:
“your thoughts
a ripple not a tide”
Indeed when you interact with an ocean brain this will happen.
Bjorn, you played this prompt, my friend – which is meant in the best way possible. Love the poster you mined on your own and source material. The poem takes it to a new level. I like how your word choice and patterns almost mimic a Russian accent, especially in those last lines. Stellar work. Viva la, thanks so much for posting to the out of standard.
Maybe my Swedish help… 🙂
A hint of the worst aspects of the Collective, too. Nice to find a serious one amongst the fun – even perturbing.
Now, having watched the trailer, plus the comparison of original film and remake, I just HAVE to see the original. (And probably the remake too.)
The full movie is on youtube actually.
I’ll have to see the movie, too … There’s a sweaty relation between the ocean of collective thought and the dominance of state of control over that thought … With one freedom comes the other hell, and may, in fact, be identical, at least in the paranoid mind. (That’s what King Crimson sang in “21st Century Schizoid Man”) Fun and frightening.
Wow… love the connection between King Crimson and Tarkovski and Lem… yes there is something of that too.
BTW the full movie is on youtube… with English subtitles.
Nicely done, Bjorn!
your closest friend,
your lovers and regrets
are nearer in your sleep.
That thought alone is worth 1000 words. The idea of mind control is sinister, yet closer than we think.
“your lovers and regrets
are nearer in your sleep.” – such a powerful line, I can connect this to so many things. I love sci-fi, but the newer things are disheartening, so I will check out Solaris!
