In blackbird mornings, with a sweetness
greets us in the slant of rays; in licks of sun.
When spun at dawn, the bike-path seems
as streamed on gold, a necklace lighter
than the bite of frost warmed by our muscles
tussling, wheeled away on the way to work.
When irk of dark is gone a mile seems shorter,
when sport is sung from wheels on gravel roads.
when loads on shoulders leaves for days of spring.
We drink the smells of soil, anticipate the flowers
growing underneath, as soon the crocus sends
its scent in days this close to equinox.
Today Grace hosts dVerse Open Link, as we are having our first day of something that really feels like spring. The bike-ride to work today was pure joy. I played a little with internal rhymes, but it’s still pretty much work in progress… I might work a little bit more on the poem before the pub opens at 3PM EST.

What a lovely tribute to the coming of the spring season Bjorn ~
This part really sings for me:
when loads on shoulders leaves for days of spring.
We drink the smells of soil, anticipate the flowers
Is spring coming even in your northern climes? We still have snows on the mountains and frost in the morning, but it gets warm in the afternoon and very sunny.
As for these three lines, they really express the joy of leaving darkness behind (for someone suffering from SAD, very poignantly so):
When irk of dark is gone a mile seems shorter,
when sport is sung from wheels on gravel roads.
when loads on shoulders leaves for days of spring.
For many it would probably be winter still, but for us up here, this feels like spring 🙂
I envy you your health & lovely bike ride mornings; this one really put us there beside you; you had me at /blackbird morning/. I like the line
/when sport is sung from wheels on gravel roads/.
Such a beautiful poem regarding Spring 🙂
I read this early this morning when I woke and I was so inspired for my Spring day. When I have troubles, spring weather soothes them
You have such a way with hauling me along on those early morning bike rides, in allowing me to share all the sensory details you experience. What a way to be inspired.
brimming with good fortune, few days to equinox
I like the smell of soil – always had. Your poem brings in a lot of freshness….
‘slant of rays; in licks of sun.
When spun at dawn,’
Music to my ears!
Another fine piece of art, Bjorn.
“muscles tussling” is great fun. Love that.
🙂
So good to have more light. and makes the bike ride easier. I love your irk of dark! I can feel the blooming getting ready under the earth!
This poem has such a strong image to it. I could see the bike ride, the early morning light, the smell even, Spring coming to life…
After a very brutal February, in southern Ontario, this poem brings the promise of warmer weather and the sweet songs of birds, calling out, for their mates. As southern Ontario is being drenched, by late winter rain shower, chasing away the white blanket of winter.
Yes! on the bike path… drinking the smells… in licks of sun… A musically lyrical hymn of praise to the spring, Bjorn
blackbird mornings and licks of sun… oh this was a wonderful bike ride!
The imagery and ideas are working beautifully Bjorn, so well done and with a real feel of spring.
It feels of spring, a lightness of mood, an anticipation
Gorgeous imagery – giving the total sensory experience of a new world in spring. Lovely capture – a painting in words.
I want a drink from that well of spring you’ve dug up.
I love the way this nature filled-adoring poem just flows from tongue…feels like the very thoughts that were being thought in the moment…very authentic.
Dude, the piece already smells of wet earth…play around with it when you read it aloud…it has a malleable rhythm…
Biking to work must be a joy 🙂 Spring on the farm and we “drink the smells of soil” too…love the synesthesia!
The weather his is so wishy-washy this close to spring. But the first bloom of crocus certainly become a harbinger of good things to come, Bjorn! Thanks for bringing us along on your trek!
Pleasant weather a precursor of what good things to come this Spring. Lots of anticipation and expectations!

“When spun at dawn, the bike-path seems

Great lines! I love how you capture the relief of spring and relinquishing the burden of winter.
Thanks… I’m getting the “fever” 🙂
good write!

Love this line: “When irk of dark is gone.” Unfortunately, it’s been back each morning for me this week with our time change and having to get up in the dark again. But even so there are crocuses. Peace, Linda
Lovely tribute to spring coming. I noticed there are more birds by the lake.
Those longer days are certainly something to enjoy. The further north you are, the more true this is.
this lovely piece reminds me of the peaceful scenery of country roads when flowers are in bloom and the air smells sweet. ahhhh, the things i miss most.
ug….internet problems so will reply again.
I do love this. Have a friend who enjoys bike riding and I always picture him just flying with the wind behind his back. You’ve slowed the riding down here with the coming of spring, its sights and scents. I love the imagery here. Feel like I’ve been on the ride with you!
By the way, I think it was you that mentioned quite some time ago in a reply, something about another site where many of the dVerse folks also hang out….but for the life of me, can’t find that reply or recall the site. There are so many out there. And your invitation to this one has been a delight! So, if my memory is correct, can you let me know that site again? We’ll return to Boston end of March and I’ll be back in my “routine” of early morning reads and writes……Bermuda has proven a wonderful muse and at the same time a wonderful distraction! 🙂
On Sunday’s there is Poetry Pantry at http://poetryblogroll.blogspot.com – check it out, the link is open now.
That’s it! THANKS!
Love the licks of sun. The entirety is splendid.
