Cupid branding hearts

With tresses flying, precious petals
in your dreaming softness, silky flow.
How fire kindles in the arrow’s wind
from Cupid’s quiver – branding hearts.

You came to me a summer day
with smell of grass and whispered sea.
A selkie dream with seaweed hair
with tresses flying, precious petals.

We kissed in salt with curtains down
I drowned within your copper mane.
Moaning hands were deep entangled
in your dreaming softness, silky flow.

You aimed for me with brazen eyes
to be handcuffed to your wistful want
and falling willingly imprisoned — I know
how fire kindles in the arrow’s wind.

Later full awake I found my pillow wet
a single strand of hair was all you left
and on my chest those purple scars
from Cupid’s quiver – branding hearts.

Today Anthony mans the bar at dVerse Poetics, and want us to write poetry on hair. During the weekend I wrote my first cascade, and it was an intriguing form that I wanted to work a little bit more on. So I have this little fairy tale with lots of hair in it.

  1. the smell of grass and whispered sea….great detail in that….we kissed in salt as well…what a cool tangible relic as well in that lone tress on the pillow….

  2. I like how the ending makes the reader ponder whether this is real or a dream. I too like the image of the ‘smell of grass and whispered sea’.

  3. Cascades do look cool, maybe even fun; for some MTB perhaps. Love the fairy tale/legend feel to this one, silky flow vs. selkie dream. The movie ONDINE is a must after reading this, with Colin Farrell. Terrific lines, & killer last stanza too. Got to roll on appointments, be out on the trail later on.

  4. A poignant ending but I so love that second stanza:

A selkie dream with seaweed hair
    with tresses flying, precious petals.

Lovely work on the verses Bjorn ~ Cheers ~

  5. Very sensual, quite haunting. Reminds me of the ending to one of my favourite poems by TS Eliot:
We have lingered in the chambers of the sea
By sea-girls wreathed with seaweed red and brown
Till human voices wake us, and we drown.

  6. Bjorn – This form works very well for you..this poem pulled me quickly following cupid arrow filled with sensuality. This is one of my new favorites of yours.

  7. Love ‘fire kindles the arrow’s wind’ and ‘summer day’, ‘moaning hands’,
and those ‘purple scars branding hearts’..strikingly beautiful!

  8. what a lovely and sad poem, Selkies are so romantic. Thank you for using my picture to illustrate your post, that’s exactly why i put Creative Commons licenses on them.

  9. Enchanting… magical… truly a fairy tale! This was a beautiful cascade, I almost feel like the girl herself was a female cupid… just my interpretation 🙂

I love your feedback
