thirteenth floor the thirteenth day

on thirteenth floor the thirteenth day
a mirror breaks from edge to edge
when elevators all are stuck
your smoke-filled stairs turn me to stone
my room is filled with soot-black cats
and balance sheets that just sums up
to thirteen dollars in the red
when windows open easily
I feel the lack of angel wings
my can of mustard turns to mold
computer worms are crawling out
and ask for wiggle-room to thrive
on thirteenth floor the thirteenth day

PU asks us for 13 lines on 13.. somehow 13 made me think of Roky Erickson as well. Enjoy.

  1. One of my fears with elevators is that the elevator will stick between floors. I had that experience one time, trapped in an elevator between floors with a group of high school kids I was chaperoning. After that I walked between floors. Smiles. Hmmm, I wonder if we were staying on the 13th..

  2. ha. lived on the 13th floor in my dorm when i was in school…there were all kinda stories….the building i worked in after skipped the 13th floor…which was funny, a bit that the superstitions would take that much hold, you know….

  3. I love the worlds of the imagination that pile up images to the point of laughter. Let’s not do paperwork today. Let’s pay attention to the kitties that pose in our worlds. No 2-headed dogs need apply!

  4. The situation you describe in your poem, Björn, would be a nightmare to the superstitious or anyone who hates crawly creatures. I wonder whether people stay at home on the 13th to make sure nothing happens to them.

  5. “computer worms” that was a creepy line because it could mean computer virus destroying all of your files and hacking all of your accounts. good thing 13 is my lucky number. oh. i do live on the 13th floor and it’s been nothing but rainbows thus far (knock on the proverbial wood:) great post.

  6. I live the seemingly ordinary objects – the mustard tin – that give colour and surreality to this day..in a way it is magical..a special day

  7. Computer worms with wiggle room… a brilliant concept. Thirteen – I’m not a superstitious guy, but your piece highlights some reasons to rethink my position! Nice one, Bjorn!

  8. A bit of an Ogden Nash “A Tale of the Thirteenth Floor” vibe to this one. (Something about that 13th Floor conjures up eerie poetic possibilities, it seems.)

  9. Bjorn, enjoyed your poem of “13” mirror breaks from edge to edge..yikes..edgy write..
