aweigh! aweigh!
in misty night the tinkle
cadence of the chains
anchor raises as we
leave these shores
aweigh! aweigh!
siderate: a rough command
bending backs silently
capturing night as we
leave these shores
aweigh! aweigh!
sands of time in open hands
before we will return again
will maidens wait if we
leave these shores

Greek frigate at anchor by Konstantinos Volanakis
I follow a number of word prompts at twitter. Today I had the words aweigh and night from #ohj, tinkle from #lqw, cadence from #artwiculate, siderate from #altwic and “sands of time” in #orjay. I thought I could make a little 55 word story out of these. Linked to G-Man Mr-Knowitall’s friday 55.

You managed amazingly well. Reminds me of cruising around the Galapagos. We always sailed at night.
Hey, brother, heavy-duty 55; comes off like a sailor/pirate shanty. Been watching the new series BLACK SAILS, & your 55 even makes Johnny Depp smile.
i think you did the prompts, and the chosen words, justice. particularly love the last stanza and the reference to time!

They had to row so hard and long ! some were chained I am told. Thanks for the song and the visit!
Impressive with only 55 words, Bjorn!
I was a maiden in waiting! I love your poem-my husband was in the Navy-anchors away alright! Off to watch Black Sails now-well done!
Pretty neat Bjorn! Certainly did and a smooth one too!

i like that last stanza as to me it carries the ship story forward but opens this up to life as well…
can’t wait to see what you do with Talk Like a Pirate Day 🙂 ~
there’s so much excitement and so much pain in the life of a sailor.. he’s able to see so many different things…has so much stories to tell and has to leave behind everything that’s precious to him…
I like the tone and the way you conveyed sailor language!
Sounds like the thoughts of real seamen back in the day of the tall ships. Good piece, Bjorn
I loved the rhythm. The perfect cadence for the subject matter.
Bjorn….
Sounds like a weary traveller whose journey never ends.
What an introspective and somber 55
Fantastic job My Friend.
Thank for this well written little yarn, and have a Kick ASS Week End
Awesome 🙂
