on silver sails, we set our hope
in ships that gravity eloped
we left a planet in despair
from death on earth we did forswear
away, away in rapid pace
alone in space it’s hard to cope
for mutiny we used the rope
we couldn’t have lament and tears
on silver sails
Now left alone I live on dope
I see the heartbeats on my scope
and count the stars within my prayer
for death I have no longer fears
my coffin disappears in smoke
on silver sails
Today it’s Open Link Night at dVerse (opens at 3PM EST). And I have been reading Aniara – and got inspired to write about a spaceship lost in space.

Trying to catch what I can of your wonderful writing. Never disappointed…always amazed and in awe of your writing.
ah.. yes trying a new genre within an old form 🙂
this is beautiful writing – the reading, an extra gift. thank you.
AH.. thank you .. so happy for sunshine in November 🙂
a spaceship lost in space..how dreadful a thought… could be interpreted in a few ways…the journey we’re going…the things we leave behind… i think so cool it might be to go on a space excursion, i would miss the earth terribly..
If you ever get the chance to read Aniara. I would recommend it…
Most futurists believe we will travel to the stars in soul-bursts, remote viewing, sending our essence; space ships do not seem to be part of the solution; but love your take on it. Like Claudia, I see more than the surface of the rondeau spitting out sci-fi; it is reaching beyond one’s grasp, and sometimes the cost of folly.
Actually some of the more revolutionary literature I have read has been Sci-Fi..
This is beautiful and so full of meaning!
Thank you… for some reason this was trapped as spam..
Great. Loved the rhymes and the rhythm. A sci-fi tale with emotions that stay persistent always. 🙂
Ha. yes sometimes we need the space to describe humanity…
I love “on silver sails we set our hope..” Sad, however, that what had been expected to be an escape from despair on earth ended with death somewhere out in space.
Yes .. I think keeping together on spaceship change humans.. Aniara is just such a story.
Lovely write…nice lines .. count the stars within my prayer
for death I have no longer fears
my coffin disappears in smoke
on silver sails. -sad
Thank you.. an end of many great space trips.
“for death I have no longer fears
my coffin disappears in smoke
on silver sails”
Poignant ending.
Thank you 🙂
Not very observant today, I guess. I read this a few minutes ago and completely missed the sci-fi element. Much cooler with that brought into focus. Thanks for pointing it out to a dim-eyed rabbit.
ha.. no problem.. maybe I need to work a little better on it to make it clear… had been so absorbed by Aniara recently.
Had to look that up. Little secret–Americans tend to be poorly read outside what they’re taught in school. I’m trying to remedy that. Off to read on the Aniara now. 🙂
I always wondered the fascination of living in space..The thought of leaving mother earth for more virtual reality..simply scares the hell out of me..Imagining living in a desert is too painful to even imagine..being separated from so much life..in fertile sands and sun…
Ah yes.. space is scary, but I think just as the desert writing about it bring out that single element of humanity.. isolated from the nature we are just humans.
I like the tone, how its spooky and romantic at the same time.
Thank you .. 🙂
My imagination had been troubled now, so its in too deep! Yea, your poetic language has evoke the thoughts!!!!!!!
Hi Bjorn,
Indeed: “no lament and tears on silver sails…” For me, your audio rendering really brought this to life… With Best Wishes Scott http://www.scotthastie.com
Your voice gave this the heartbeat, syncopated, echoing in my ears from that coffin. Wow.
Thank you Susan 🙂
Wow, what a fascinating person and poem. So long. I didn’t see any links to an online translation of the entire poem. Maybe I can find one in a bookstore or something. Thanks for mentioning it. 🙂
Its been made into opera as well.. really a great book.
Wow! Great poem and fantastic twist. LOved hearing your reading of it too.
ah cool subject…i am a big sci fi fan….the new pioneers….off to find brave new worlds….the explorer in me finds it completely fascinating….
I’m so glad for that… 🙂
Brilliant rondeau. And the story it tells is compelling reading.
Excellent rondeau. Great flow. Especially liked the last stanza. Nice hearing you recite it too. Well penned, Bjorn.
well done indeed
the rhythm moves
in perfect time
Dancing a bit on the dark side Bjorn..the opening line hooked me and I was not disappointed..haunting piece..I enjoyed listening to the audio as well 🙂
interesting. reminded me of a lovely, haunting song by neil young in about 1973 called After the Gold Rush “flying mother nature’s silver seed to a new home in the sun”
The ending really strikes me and the audio is a very nice bonus.
Delicious Rondeau! Such lovely imagery.
I would be rather nice to escape our entire world, at least for a bit. Love the journey of this poem. 🙂
Love the rondeau as a form, and wrestling words into just the right place is a lot of fun, and you do it well.
Science fiction now but may be a reality in the not too distant future. They’re now talking of a one way trip to Mars on a 6 month journey. Great take Bjorn!
Hank
hey Bjorn 🙂
great reading man: really adds to the piece which I like for its rhythm. well worth formalising, adding extra weight or gravitas to your words.
Yikes — this is a frightening Vision made even more unearthly by the odd combination of the modern and the old-fashioned– space ship and sails x. Thanks.
Excellent rondeau sir!
Wow…you make form your own. Masterful.
This is so exciting to be able to hear you actually reading your rondeau – great stuff!
Maggie is right. You never disappoint, Bjorn. Love this, especially when read aloud. 🙂 ~jackie~
love how you navigated us through your poem
Fine poem. It seems you are lost on the astral.
Excellent internal rhyming Bjorn. It was refreshing reading your piece using that poetic device.
a sci-fi Rondeau!…or perhaps I’m missing the greater meaning…either way, another great poem!
So creative, full of mystery. Wonderful
Brilliant, high quality, Björn
Love this sci fi twist from you. Very cool my friend.
