This weeks entry in 100 word challenge for grownups. The prompt is … and winter would bring . This week exactly 100 word.

Her garden was basking in the summer sun. As usual she was with her beloved flowers. She always talked with her petunias and sat down with the roses. Just then her mobile vibrated and she received a text message:

"I am leaving U, will not come home 2night"

Everything went black, and she passed out.

Returning after a month in hospital her garden was as brown and dry as her soul. She walked into the empty house, and cleaned out his things.

She sighed with relief, no gardening and winter would bring her the solace she need.

  1. and the cold of winter always rejuvenates with the promise of spring…eventually. great imagery and, as said above, the juxtaposition is well done. She seemed, to me, lonely even with the relationship …

  2. So sad, but a very nice use of the challenge phrase. It does sound as if her flowers got most of her attention, but she’s better off without the man that wouldn’t tell her face to face that he’s leaving her.

  3. I’m not sure why she was relieved there was no gardening? Curling up indoors can be a solace, sure, especially with a good book! 🙂

      • Ah, yes, of course!
And I hope she can discover the joys of the garden again, if only to laze about in it – which is surely the noblest purpose of a garden!

  4. And in one moment, her world looks like it inverted itself. But with winter comes a new spring, and new growth along the way.
Great work with this one. Very emotional and turbulent.
