Let them lose

Let them ban my books, suppress my voice
and I will turn my back and walk away
listen to the trees to let myself be free

Let them bark about their woes and victimhood
let their voice grow bitter, hoarse
and I will let them ramble ‘til they’re dumb

Let them fight their wars in silence
ignore but let myself record, collect and save
for a time when tides have turned

Let them tie themselves, from lies a noose
and I will watch them dangle in their web
until a time when I may let them loose

Let them fail and fall just let them lose
because our strength is in the right of numbers
with math we’ll save what’s left.

Let me build the path away to something else
Let me live with you with trees
Let us thrive on what’s after when silence rules

Woman at a Window
Caspar David Friedrich

Today Mish hosts dVerse poetics with a prompt that simply start with Let Them (and/or Let Me) and see what transpires from that. In today’s toxic world it is time to ignore some of what triggers us most. In the long run, don’¨t ignore but record for a time of reconning.

  1. I love that you illustrated your poem with a Caspar David Friedrich painting, Björn, and the defiant tone of your poem made me feel want to read it out loud. Everyone should listen to trees.

  2. Your title lines up perfectly with mine, Bjorn. This is so powerful! The numbers really do make the difference. We have to believe in the strength of good over evil.

  3. Oh, Bjorn, your opening lines drew me right in, for that is how I cope too. So grateful for nature’s wild beauty. Yet feeling the weight of all humanity is doing to the planet at the same time. A schizophrenic existence, holding the two truths. How your poem resonates with me……our greater numbers. Your three closing lines speak right to my heart.

  4. So many beautiful verses in this one! I was especially taken by the pacing and rhythm of your 4th and 5th paragraphs.

  6. I’m struggling with this line “Let them bark about their grape and victimhood” as I’m unsure of your intention. Grape is in common use across social media to stop a similar word from being blocked and comments being removed. I may be reading too much into your use here, or misunderstanding your idea completely.

  7. I so hope for what your title says. I love the flow of your lines, and especially the first stanza and the hopefulness in the last.

    That’s a beautiful Friedrich painting.

  8. I too love the title and I think the trees will have lots of company. They have strong roots and so do all of those who wish to find a path to somewhere peaceful.
