Together in joy

A penguin, a partridge, a sweet kangaroo
had nothing with no one at Christmas to do
the met at a bar drinking bourbon with coke
but after a few the partridge was broke
the penguin teared up, his partner had left
Kango got mad, thought his tab was a theft
Out on the street these challenging guests
were hurled, tipsy they were not at their best
they gazed at each other and knew it’s the time
admitting their failures, it wasn’t a crime
lonely together they went to the flat
the penguin had shared with lover and cat;
in comfort, that Christmas, together in joy,
our trio, were singing and playing with toys.

Bing helped me generate this silly cartoon. It had real trouble drawing a partridge.

Today Melissa hosts dVerse poetics and asks us to write poetry using one of the animals, the penguin, the partridge, the kangaroo and the wren. I might not have followed the prompt exactly but my little rhyme became a sweet Christmas story. The wren was too small to really fit into the story, but I think she might have been the ex of the penguin.

  1. What a lovely and joyful Christmas story. I was about to sing along with the tipsy trio. Glad that they can be together to comfort each other, singing and playing with toys.

  2. That was nice of the penguin to invite everyone over. Glad their Christmas turned out alright despite the partridge’s bleak financial outlook and the penguin’s (maybe) broken heart. Perhaps the new year will bring reconciliation!

  3. What a fun poem, Börn – and you got almost all the creatures in. I have a psychedelic image in my head of the penguin, partridge and kangaroo in a bar, getting drunk. I especially love the lines:
‘lonely together they went to the flat
the penguin had shared with lover and cat’.
I’m glad they had fun together
