Bridge by reading

Books are often bridges
rickety and narrow
reaching over lightyears
of space and time
an arrow inked
in blood and soot
from mind to mind.

Books can bridge
the sea and deserts
over rivers, borders
into bedrooms, kitchens,
into the hardened heads
of misogynist and terrorists,
but if you never let touch
your dreams, it might
instead enrage,
cause words in cage
taken out of context
are often the accelerants
a self-appointed zealot
use to burn the bridges
libraries are set to be.

Books are often bridges
but you have dare
to read and comprehend
that everyone
is not the same

Today Punam hosts at dVerse, and the topic is bridges.

  1. I love the metaphor I see flowing through this, where books are comparative to people, as the old adage goes. I love this part especially:

    “an arrow inked
    in blood and soot
    from mind to mind.”

  2. Great perspective on reading, Bjorn. I’m reading Chuck Palahniuk’s brand new book right now and it’s taking me to all sorts of new places. The subject matter is best described as shocking and volatile, but the wrapping holds such precious kernels of blinding truth within it.

  3. Hits a nerve here, Bjorn. Our US state, Texas has banned the most book titles of any other state. Our large neighbor city of Houston has a “sanctuary” section to read and/or be checked out. My Houston Library card had expired but anyone who has a Texas driver’s license is eligible to get one. Bravo!!
