October

October is a forgotten pendant,
the kind you find in junk-shop trinket boxes,
a diamond sleeping with the rhinestones,
the gold pretending to be brass,
an out of fashion gem.
But, inside it hides a lock of hair
left as memory of times less grey.

October is the locket left behind.

Magaly want’s us to describe October in new terms at toads. Also she want us to keep it short. I will also link up to Poetry United tomorrow morning.

  1. This is fantastic. I love everything about this piece … especially the part about the hair. That follow-up picture really made me laugh.

    P.S. It’s 2016, bro. 😉

  2. I love, love, love what your poem says (to me at least) about tradition, Bjorn. So many wonderful things have been left behind, but that never means that the leaving takes away their wonder.

  3. What a wonderful extended metaphor – and your writing is splendidly October-esque … in a such an unusual way (it would take pages to try and suss it out). A pleasure to read.

  4. Can one really fault October? It stands in the way of whatever warmth left before the cold months. It disappears in a fleeting moment, too soon!

  5. Wonderful, Björn. October does seem to be a forgotten month by some – I love it – has to be my favourite month. I like the metaphor of t’he gold pretending to be brass,
    an out of fashion gem.
But, inside it hides a lock of hair
left as memory of times less grey’.

  6. What a unique metaphor to compare October to jewelry … the change of leaves does look like colorful gems … it is one of my favorite months.

  7. I think of October like this all the rest of the year. It used to be my favorite month until vandalism and freakiness kidnapped Halloween!

  8. Bjorn – You bring unexpected images to October that I love — but it is true, in other seasons I do reminisce about the autumn, a favorite memory — Thanks for sharing this, it’s lovely.

  9. Poor October, she doesn’t come across in a very good light here from you. But I still like her, my BDay is at the end of October. Nice write, Bjorn.

  10. joining the long line of commenters here to marvel at your gem of a poem for this Octo month

  11. I love the way you have painted October as a hidden gem. I still marvel at our persistence in calling September, October and November as though they were the 7th, 8th and 9th months when they haven’t been that way since the Roman times! No wonder October and the rest have a complex!
