milky sea

we sipped silence once
we stripped and skinny dipped
in milky sea

you sat with kelp beside me
mute and wet
in fluorescent skin

were you selkie?
were you dream or sin?
and moments melted
to eternity
as luminescence dimmed

years have passed
and when winter’s close
we are far from sea
but there is still a sense of
salt in silence left

This is an old memory from many years back when we went swimming in milky sea, were the water becomes fluorescent when due to bioluminescent bacteria or dinoflagellates. The effect is quite magic, and this nightly swim is something I sometimes recall in silent moments together.

  1. I guess the word I’m seeking to describe this is “enchanting,” but so much more. Those are the kind of memories that do stay with us and seem to become even more beautiful as time softens them.

  2. Beautiful words that convey a memory of an, almost, otherworldly encounter … and some – very special – memories do come back to us that way, I think.
