“Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” — Albert Einstein
chronicling my quarter life crisis
This is just marvelous. I often, as a child, would thjnk such irreverent thoughts about such august persons as high wire acrobats, prima ballerinas, and pastors. Apparently I never grew up as I still do wonder. This haiku made me grin huvely.
Ha.. I had so very little experience of lion dance so I had to do something else with a tricky kigo like that.. 🙂
I saw the lion dance once when in Akihabara and several times in various US China and JTowns. Always very thrilling and exciting with crums banging and fireworks popping. A blast of sound, color and movement.
my martial arts school used to do lion dances. If you go back to the origins, it was a way for martial arts schools ( usually associated with the tongs ) to shakedown protection money.
Ah.. I didn’t know that…
Usually businesses would put out a red envelope, sometimes poised high that only an acrobatic move could pull down. When the lion accepted the envelope, that business was under the protection of that school.
Once during our dances, some kid was standing by and being disrespectful. I recall the tail of the lion happened to send out a round-house kick about two inches from his head. He quietly walked away.
Loved the humor — really made me laugh!
And the comments are fascinating….
Oh for sure!!! how parades are lovely to watch but one does not realize the sacrifice.

Brilliant and so true! Must be terrible to be in that situation…
