Carpe Diem Haiku – Shiba Sonome’s “dogs howling “

The haiku of Shiba Sonome:

dogs howling
at the sound of leaves –
storm on the way!

leaves me with a sense of threat. The dogs feel the coming storm in that gentle rustle of leaves. So I want to capture that in my haiku to. Animals often have a much keener sense of what will happen and if we could have a keener sense of observation we might capture that.

I select another animal for my haiku, and another storm:

black cloud of crows
cawing in the setting sun –
harbingers of war

  1. really nice…. I agree the first (and yours) has a ominous feel to it. animals do seem to have a sixth sense that we humans are not in tune with. you painted this image well with your haiku.

  2. Beautiful response Bjorn. I like that woodblock print of the crows. Are they really the harbingers of war? I know that crows are associated with death and magic, but harbingers of war?

  3. I think your right (now that I’ve read your comment in your post) there is a sense of threat in the original haiku … crows are the perfect gathering predicting war was a perfect choice … wonderful take on the prompt.

I try to reciprocate all comments. If you want me to visit a particular post, please direct me directly to that post.
