A major change – for Friday Fictioneers

Allen only knew the black keys; he always thought his blood was black as ink and his veins could only pulse to the moody beat of blues. The dappled sunshine on ivory made him cringe with discomfort initially, but for the first time in his life he had a reason — Ellen —- to raise his head and breathe the morning sunshine. He recalled her blond tresses on his shoulders, and suddenly his fingers started to move with a steadier beat. He felt a major change coming while touching the cool ivory. He heard her movements from upstairs and smiled.

This week I wanted to move from utter darkness into the lighter world of romance. Hopefully it lasts for them, I hope you like it.

  1. What an opening line!

“Allen only knew the black keys”

Love that. If I may be ever-so slightly critical/bold, I’d lose the italic on the “major”. Be confident in what you wrote, the subtlety will make it stand out more than the font change in my opinion.

    Great piece.

  2. That was excellent, darling. Love the concept of his major change, from the black keys to the white. So much depth and symbolism to this story. One of your best.

  3. Always think your work is excellent, especially considering English isn’t your first language. Not sure I could write a sentence in Swedish, never mind a story!

  4. Bjorn,
And our hero finds his muse. It’s interesting what love does to art. I know many artists who struggle to create when they are happy and life is going smoothly. Good to see that for some the opposite is the case.

    All my best,
    Marie Gail

  5. lovely…I like the piano keys and musical sound finding a new light. it feels like the sun is just kissing the horizon on a new day.

  6. You never disappoint, Bjorn — loved the major/minor points. 🙂
Glad Allen found a muse to coax him onto those white keys.

  7. I like how you show his world expanding when he met Ellen through his discovery of the white keys – a whole new world of beautiful melodies at his fingertips.

  8. Like it? I loved it! Well then, I write romance, and it’s the only thing that moves me any more… Excellent Björn!!

  9. Darkness to light was a good move this week, Bjorn. Ib fact, I liked the “major” mention. Nice pun. I knew a guy in college who said he could only play the black keys. Everything would have to written in the Dorian mode if he was going to play stuff written in the pentatonic scale. Showing off my musical knowledge, yes, I know …
Do another bright and shiny. Nothing wrong when there’s substance (which you have here). Fun stuff and we need it bad.
