Carpe Diem Haiku – Popol-Vuh (Mayan Mythology, Creation story)

In all creation stories humanity have created it’s centered round the thought of men, this is not unnatural – the stories are after all created only in our thoughts. In that respect they are also always true, who would ever write such the story without our minds to create it. And even if someone, say a blackbird, would think about their own creation – would it be understandable to anyone but the blackbird? In that respect the stories are to be viewed as metaphors of the creation of our own sense of being, and we might very well ask ourselves, would the world look the same without us?

how would blackbirds sing?
if none where there to listen –
creation’s riddle

Still, how could we, if we look around, understand anything about the purpose of our being, without the introduction of a deity. Without a God we are alone, our awareness lack purpose, and we would be left here on this grain of sand – traveling without purpose around a lonely star in a vastness we can never comprehend. The thought of living without purpose would drive us to insanity.

without a god
humanity would be
alone and cold

  1. Very interesting read – nice haibun, and really two great ideas there. Well written, and an argument based on philosophy, not absolutetism. Enjoyed it very much.

  2. I like how you have chosen your way in this post … I think we were helpless without gods or God … but … there are also people who say that we can create our own reality and our own surroundings … than we needed no gods or God.

    • Some belief is needed.. yes I think so.. as soon as you start to think about your own consciousness you will have problem.. I still recall waking up in my own consciousness as a very young boy.. and I’m trying to connect to that feeling again.

  3. I like the two haiku. Believing in a higher order is part of what makes us humans since all cultures long for the divine. Indeed we would probably feel very cold and lonely if we did not have a god.

  4. Myth has that special attraction of combining a make-believe to a reality. In most instances it cannot be reconciled and remains a mystery within realms of a step beyond. Great thoughts Bjorn!

  5. its an interesting thought on without god our insanity…and perhaps that gives reason to the state of our world, in light of our turn from any god beyond our own greed.

  6. I agree, Bjorn. The thought of life without a purpose would be hard. I think we all need to know there is something / someone beyond us, a reason for us & it all.

  7. i think we’re here to worship… with our voice, with our writing, with our paintings, in caring for each other, in admiring all the beauty… & & &…

  8. Bjorn, I like where your thoughts went with this writing. I agree there is a higher purpose a god.. a deity that leads the way for mankind. Without purpose we are all just lost souls..I believe our ability to create is a gift and I once read an article that ancient gods like to be entertained..something to ponder.

  9. Deep thoughts today in a new form (for me). I tend to agree with you, though I have some atheist friends who would reject the idea that their life has no purpose, or that they’re going insane. I think they still have a god in their lives, they just call it something different, like science or reason.
