I capture scribbled notes like butterflies
they’re telling stories of the ash we leave
of all compassion sacrificed for gain
of all our profiteering selfishness
I’m digging deeper yet for centipedes
with rape they’re consummating as she dies
our mother rots we’re dancing on her grave
and shiver selfishly in pensiveness
with poems of regret to numb my pain
I draw conclusions for humanity
our dying mother is a sarcofage
as we travel in our vice possessiveness
in brimstone soot we still prefer the lies
too dumb as slow reactions is our bane
I tried to write a bref double. Never tried it before.. I think I got the rhymescheme right. I kept it to pentameter to stay in my comfort zone..

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeekkkk
indeed.. I’m in dark mood today..
You might need a warning disclaimer next time LOL 🙂
Don’t think I’ve heard of that form before! Thought-provoking work. I never realized how prolific you are Bjorn, and certainly no banal.
I have a period of being prolific.. I liked this intricate rhymescheme.. 🙂
Such a thoughtful and thought-provoking piece. And I realized and nodded along with your words and the truthfulness of this bit made me think: “as we travel in our vice possessiveness”. 🙂
indeed.. it’s a dark world we live in sometimes 🙂
this is so wonderfully dark…
I’m in a dark mood tonight..
interesting form. I googled bref double, and came up with a few options for rhyme scheme. Makes this sort of like a sonnet, but with the different rhyme scheme, it give it a feel of blank verse. I may have to give this form a try at some point.
Indeed… and it does not have to be pentameter.. just consistent.. The important thing is the end rhymes of the 3 quatrains and then you can scatter the a and b rhymes how you like it…
This one gave me chills, in the best possible way. You’re definitely on a roll Bjorn. 🙂
Very, very dark.
is it wrong that I prefer to stick with the butterflies as opposed to the centipedes? although, considering the stories they tell….
a very intense write. very intresting imagery. it makes me squirm a bit, which I suppose is quite fitting.
veerrrrryyyyy interesting. *runs off to look up form*
dark is beautiful too…nice lines
damn…dark and foreboding…really a strong opening lines that hooked me right in…and it got grittier as it went along….great write bjorn
very strong and dark, but amazing!
Bjorn, I liked the poem, but that picture was too real-looking for me. I know the creepy crawlers are necessary in the chain of life, but keep them away from me. 🙂 —Susan
Ah.. yes they are quite rare in my part of the world.. but I do understand that they can be viewed differently…
Very powerful images- dark, yes, but so is the “profiteering selfishness” thought provoking write.
This is brilliant… dark or not! You amaze me, Bjorn! Publish, please!!!!
Ha, yes it will happen one day.. 😉
Rather disturbing poem…and photo. Can’t help but think of all our discarded possessions ending up in nearby landfill; ugly scars on the earth…
I always love a poem that is written with a naturalist’s eye. Here I get the sense of a keen observer, both of human nature and that something older and deeper, fundamental to the cycles of life. I thoroughly enjoyed the read and your dying mother as sarcophage is an image that will stay with me for a long time.
Yes, that is dark. You’ve come over to my side of the moon….
I feel the intensity & dismay (understatement) of your words. Can’t think of the right word. I feel that rage at humanity too for honoring physical possessions over that which gives us life.
