Today I’m very noisy – for dVerse

Through school I was so silent
shy and inbound
avoided center stage
and blushed easily.

But!

I made a resolution –
change and occupy my voids
at university.

First week, saw me singing
solo, lacking harmony
(only slightly drunk)
but with sinister gusto
fellow students cheering

My shyness left, and never more
you’ll see me silent on the side-
I changed myself – I’m very noisy.

Today at dVerse poetics, Anthony asks us to give accounts on a turning point in our life that made us the poets we are today. Though I never wrote poetry as a student, I think my first week at university changed me in ways that lead me to be a poet…

  1. You good with the vocals? Ha.. I can relate: I’m awful at singing tho… but that doesn’t stop me from doing it… very loudly… that’s always a good way to break the ice (or glass, in my case). smiles.

  2. I’m glad you overcame your shyness. I can relate to that. I was extremely shy as a chld. To be a teacher I had to take a speech class and I became used to speaking in front of a group with no trouble. I see no problem with being talkative and being a poet. It depends on the person.

  3. ha. i love the picture…i hope i look a little crazy like that at times…smiles…and hey only a little drunk…smiles…you will be surprised the things that once you do them become something greater when we try and push through…its cool man…we were not that much different

  4. I like your kind of ‘noisy’, Björn and am glad you became more self-assertive and then found your poetic voice. Keep up the good work!

  5. Singing with gusto in your first week was obviously the change you needed. I related to this as I was mostly shy at school and quite content to sit at the back. University changed me too, although I never sung any solos! 🙂

  6. Now you sing the body electric, to quote Whitman, & your verses, your poetic observations are thrilling & insightful to the rest of us; never was shy myself, but I never could carry a tune in a bucket, so writing became my melody.

  7. Interesting, Bjorn. I was a shy kid through high school as well, and when I went to college I determined I was going to change…shedding my old shyness. I managed to shed a lot of it, but the shy kid still lives inside. I like the singing solo, lacking harmony. I understand. If you enjoy it, go for it….and you will be seen and known. A bit of bravery changes a person and others’ view of that person as well.

  8. it is nice to know it is possible for a shy kid to break out of his shell and raise his voice. You have a nice knack for being noisy.

  9. More music than noise, Bjorn, no matter how well you sing… I too was shy almost to the point of excruciation, but I’ve made up for it… I love the image of slightly drunk singing…. I can relate…: )

  10. This is so beautiful!!! Is it true about you? Did you use to be shy and are you noisy and talkative now?

I have an English friend who mistakenly takes me as talkative and flamboyant, because he thinks all Brazilian people are like this.

    I’m actually shy.

    I love the painting too.

  11. I think many of us try out new hats in college. It’s such a great time to challenge ourselves to try out new things. I’ve never been shy but I do love my quiet and solitary time. Great photo to enhance the poem.

  12. A fun look at your transformation from shy to noisy … it’s interesting, isn’t it how we sometimes change slowly, unknowingly, and other times we change on purpose. What I like most about this poem (besides your confession) is that I can imagine you speaking this – it’s written very naturally, which I think is cool.

  13. Nice that you broke through the shyness. Alcohol only helped a little I’m sure – the outgoing singer was there all along.

  14. That reminds me of myself………… exactly what i was…….. Now no one could say were u shy……… my hubby ask me do u know what is shy……. I will answer…….. May be ……… in my past………….

  15. Nothing like a little booze to get the words flowing. Always enjoy reading your “noise”, Bjorn, and you can rest assured, it’s harmonious now.

  16. I can relate, Bjorn. I was a very shy child, due to moving around a LOT! But when we finally settled, and I felt at home, I became quite noisy.
    Love the write!

…sweet…noise lets the world know you’re alive…I can dig it.
