Carpe Diem Haiku – Yekaterinburg

Our train ride is about crossing borders. Borders between continents and regions, but also our inner borders. Sometimes these crossing coincide, maybe it’s the interruption of a simple sign that affects us. All of the sudden we become aware that we are at the same point, and conversation dwindle and synchronize. In Yekaterinburg we cross into Asia, and maybe it’s no coincidence that it was here that Russia became the Soviet union with the execution of the czar and his family.

We cross borders constantly to heavy drumbeats from the iron steed

Border between Europe and Asia

Border between Europe and Asia

I recall that Yekaterinburg straddles the border between Europe and Asia, and though this border is entirely fictitious it got me thinking about borders. When I go north in Sweden I can recall the way a company reacts when crossing the arctic circle.

  1. Interesting point on borders. Whether physical, political, or otherwise, yes, there are certainly a lot of borders to cross. (like my daily struggle to cross the border from sleep to consciousness) 🙂

  2. I really liked this. I think there is a longer poem in there about the unspecified border and the assassination of the Czar and his family. Please let me know if you might plan on writing it. If not I would like to abscond with the idea and play with it–if anything came of it I would give you full honors. >KB

  3. Fascinating thought that as we cross borders our conversations dwindle and thoughts may synchronize with fellow travellers.
I too would love to continue this thread x love the photo too!

  4. Yes, my word, fascinating, and interesting how we both approached the same concept from a very different angle. But this one is superb and brings in sub themes as well of man and machine etc. Really like those American sentences here.

  5. nice…plenty of borders being crossed, well beyond the physical ones on a map…the bit on the creation of russia/USSR it is interesting the things that turn our world and borders….

  6. Visible and invisible borders…the way and the reasons we cross them, is there always a way back…or not…needed or not…your post again has taken my mind down to the wandering lane. 🙂
