Saving the parish – Trifecta story

Father Peter crossed the churchyard on the overgrown path. Above the hunting clouds partly shadowed a full moon, casting moving shadows on the old iron crosses of the old cholera burial ground. From the tower the screech of a barn-owl was heard.

There had been complaints in his small parish again. The noises from the burial chapel had scared old Miss Stevenson out of her senses, and he thought he knew what was the reason.

As he reached the old oak door he found it locked, but he had the spare key. The well-oiled lock opened easily. Inside he found a scene that was slightly unsettling, and actually a little worse than he had expected.

On each side of the altar the two brass chandelier pulled at his attention. The one to the right was filled with the usual black candles but on top of its companion someone had put the severed head of a goat. Glutenous blood still slowly trickled down on the naked girl lying on the floor. Her glazed eyes stared back at him, as she moaned and opened her sinful arms to the priest.

The priest sighed in frustration and roared.

“Rob, come here you bastard”

A limping hunchback came out of sacristy – when he smiled his rotting teeth showed, and a pungent smell – like that of a newly opened grave whiffed through the room.

“Master?” he wheezed laboriously.

“What do you mean by animal sacrifice? When I gave you the lease, you said you were to use the chapel as a brothel – but Satanism, what were you thinking?”

Rob giggled – it sounded very much like a bubbling cauldron.

“He he, I think I beat you on the alms, father” , Rob said as he opened a chest filled with gold doubloons.

Father Peter smiled.

“Brilliant, my dear Rob, I think you’ve saved the economy of the parish”

The faint smell of sulphur became apparent as the eyes of the goat head shone bright green, just before the chapel caught fire.

  1. Some scary stuff, B! I especially liked your description of the clouds. ‘Hunting’… that’s what they look like in the sky sometimes. I wish I had thought of that.

  2. When the priest starts off walking an overgrown path through the churchyard, you know it’s not gonna turn out well.
I can see the flames leaping up towards that full moon!

  3. Oh! So the father thinks using church property as a brothel is completely fine… but I am sorry- money of course makes everything alright. Quite a creepy tale but very rich in imagery. I certainly liked it. 🙂
