the clouds lament in solitude
as sea is sighing sorrow
the footprints leading out to sea
a soul of no tomorrow
recalling what she wrote to him
about his foul betrayal
reflects herself in tidal pools
the saddest of portrayals
her cotton dress will pull her down
she longs for deeper water
and high above the seagulls cry
to her it sounds like laughter
why would they end it quite like this?
an ending of together
now sixteen and her life’s forfeit
she’s leaving earth on feathers
Linked to Poetry Pantry, where I have seen so many poetry friends hang out. So this is my first time here. I tried a sorrowful ballad for this beautiful picture.

Such a sad tale… of the lovers estranged from each other. Sensitively and beautifully written. I loved the rhymes.
Your poetic voice appeals to the hearts of the readers. 🙂

Thank you.. maybe et can be sang as a sad shanty.
I agree…
Everything written as such a beautiful tragedy except the last line. Would love to see it in same tone of tragedy. Made me think of Virginia Woolf.
I agree.. it sounded almost trivial.. and I did change it…
Beautiful…strange..it brought to memory of me at about that age getting a diagnosis of HIV….almost the same heavy feeling.. and I did…feel this.
Oh .. my hearts bleeds when I read that… I had a colleague who’s daughter committed suicide… and it’s beyond sadness…
So tragic…I feel so grateful. ..contested at 12 diagnosed at 14…truly amazing doctors and love keep me alive.
Reblogged this on an honest day or two.
You have shown beautifully how tragic the end of love might seem when it happens, especially maybe to the young who have every difficulty seeing beyond the loss. Your ballad wonderfully complements Sherry’s stunning photo.
At young age everything seemed so serious…
Wonderful ballad, Bjorn. The clouds, the sea, the footprints. I can feel her sadness. I think age 16 can be an age of intensity (and hormones) ……an ending of love can be taken so hard. I am so happy to see you at Poetry Pantry. We’re ‘open’ every Sunday!!
Now when winter is coming I might take it up… so many great ways to share poetry
she’s leaving the earth on feathers – a hopeful ending that the pain endured at an early age will find her at peace now. a very moving poem
I changed that last line.. a comment from Maggie.. and yes this ends on some level of hope. Thank you
How sad to read this ~ Such despair of a young love ~ Lovely ballad too ~
Good to see you at the UP Bjorn ~ This is where we hang out every Sunday, smiles ~
Bjorn, so wonderful to see you in the Pantry. Yay! And a surprise to see my photo, that made me smile. This is a sad dirge of the sea and a broken hearted girl. So well told…….painful, her “leaving the earth on feathers”. Sad.
Oh, so tragic but a touching ballad. The rhymes flow so well … like the sea. At that age, everything is intensified and loss seems unbearable.
ouch…how tragic…the sea is so emotive already….a place to retreat to contemplate…sixteen as well that heartbreak can feel like the end of it all…with so much life left ahead….
…a ballad at its best, Bjorn… sad tale beautifully layered and i was able to feel the sorrow & pain verse after verse… i enjoyed it… smiles…
This is really beautifully written. Love it. 🙂
I think god too needs good people.
Poignant and beautifully written!
Separation can be most awful. It’s tragic! Wonderful write Bjorn!

Hmm… always has and probably always will be this way for so many young, heat-broken lovers – just wish it wasn’t so. Nice, sad love-lost poem.
Beautifully done Björn and I do so love your reading.

I am currently rewriting a second version… I add a refrain to make it into a ballad that a friend of mine want to have with his band.. Lots of fun
Beautiful writing!
