in late autumn
farmer binds his hope
to wheat bundles

when field mouses
have dinner in the sheaf
farmer hunger

  1. I like the parallel here. I commented on Carpe Diem, too. I’m not really sure you can use the word “sheaf” with straw, since sheaf refers to bundles of cereal grain. Straw comes in bundles or bales. This haiku would work equally well if you used wheat instead of straw and that does come in sheaves.
