we’re dancing in the falling leaves
the joy of autumn us enchant
before the darkness daylight thieves
I sing in joy this light descant
above a crimson, orange roof
we’re dancing in the falling leaves
today I need no final proof
today we both in love believe
see blue of sky behind the eaves
as shadows play along in waltz
we’re dancing in the falling leaves
a day with you can have no faults
I meet your lips in tender kiss
which you so joyfully receive
this day I will recall and miss
we’re dancing in the falling leaves

By the stream, autumn by Paul Gaugain
Today it’s Open Link at dVerse. And today it’s a chance to catch up with old Form for all that I have missed. This is a quatern. And I wanted to give some contrast to some rather depressing thoughts of autumn I wrote earlier. Pub opens at 3 PM EST. See you there.

A very nice contrast Björn! I enjoy the romantic tone of your quatern and your dancing in the falling leaves. I also like how you incorporate other beautiful images of autumn. Are the leaves falling already in your area?
Not yet.. We still have summer
I love this! You know how to soothe my soul with your wonderful rhymes and beautiful message. 🙂
Thank you… I love the constraints of rhymes and meter…. 🙂
Thanks for posting my link on this page. Appreciated. This painting by Paul Gauguin is particularly striking. I thought it was influenced by Van Gogh, but it was done prior to their sharing a studio during 1888 – the episode that caused Van Gogh to cut off his ear when Gauguin left. I obviously like the line in your poem: ” … as shadows play along in waltz … ”
:-).. this painting by Gaugin I found very striking..
ha. fun piece…i am always up for dancing…i love fall as well…and dancing in the leaves is awful close to dancing in the rain….i like how the form accentuates your dance as well….
Not yet that time, but I will remember to go out and dance in the falling leaves.
Well written quatern, Björn. You express well the joy of colorful (crimson, orange) autumn at its best. Dancing in the falling leaves seems a most wonderful thing to do to enjoy the wonders of the season before the darkness of winter descends!
I must remember to do it… still a little summer… (has not been better in many years) and all green here.
dunno but this sounds like so much more than autumn… it was getting very autumn-ly over here these last days – today a chilling wind almost blew me off my bike on my way back from work.. dug out the warm lama socks ha…smiles
Your image of dancing in leaves makes the end of summer seem less ominous. Fall is a lovely time of year and your well-written quatern honors it.
You romantic softie, you … smiles.
You might want to change believes to believe in the last line of stanza 2; it’s the plural noun singular verb problem that English has and I believe Swedish doesn’t.
ahh… once again Tony… I thought I mastered it finally… but thank you I’ll change it.
How romantic & sweet ~ I love the form and repetition, we’re dancing in the falling leaves ~ Not yet autumn here so enjoying the last days of summer, smiles ~
same here … very nice summer here still
very playful and fun – may not mind the shorter days as I dance in the leaves! K
We need to dance in falling leaves to live.
A little echo of Leaves of Grass, in a much more structured way. Very melodic and autumnal. Nice, Bjorn!
Oh… that’s cool have not thought of that echo… cool
Enchanting, love the image of dancing in the leaves.
Sometimes fall comes in January in Florida..the dreams of cooler weather are different for those that fully live in the Sun I think…but it’s probably Sunny where you live..I guess..too…
Sunny yet.. but with a little bite of coolness up here in the far north of Sweden…
The rhythm is generous and musical.
Enjoyed!
Best,
Ana
Yes, enchanting is the right word. Beautiful.
Nice quatern Björn, even here in Atlanta.GA the leaves are already starting to fall. And “dancing in the falling leaves” brings back joyful memories of youth, lots of fun you have spun !!
I wanted to go lighthearted today.. … can’t always be dark an gloomy.
plenty of time for that in winter!
What fun in dancing in the falling leaves! Sweet, romantic and a sing-song like creation. I liked it.
Love love love Quatern. Quatrain? Oh perhaps you can tell me the difference if there is one, but regardless, this along with Villanelle and Kyrielles are my top three classic form. Beautiful pulled out and rolled. Lovely work.
Quatern is the poem where the first line is repeated as 2nd the 3rd and 4th. Quatrain is a four line piece (or stanza) —
Ah. Well Quatern it is that I love then 🙂 it’s the rotation that appeals.
…romantic & sad — both a good theme to create an effective quatern… your choice of refrain is really perfect Bjorn… and that missing or longing for that lost lover is really palpable…so much in the thought of autumn could be so heart brokenly felt… excellent job & truly enjoyed… smiles…
such beautiful music in this…dancing in the fallen leaves is certainly one of the very best things about autumn. just lovely!
Blue sky always is the better backdrop for fall leaves that rain or fog…let’s hope it will b as pretty as your quatern!
what beautiful poetry, such perfect tempo and rhyme,
it read so effortlessly rolling right off the tongue..
especially loved this;
before the darkness daylight thieves
I sing in joy this light descant
A lilting quatern – could easily be set to melody. Images light, airy, light and nostalgic. Very effective and well realized!
I could see you dancing on leaves, welcoming autumn. Loved the smoothness of this poem, its romance and its tempo. Really nice.
Just gorgeous. I’m bookmarking this one.
the dance here is only just beginning
well done, Bjorn, the form suits you
We’re dancing in the falling leaves..so romantic..would love a dance like that..smiling..
Rightfully anticipating a wonderful welcome to the cold! It makes it a lot easier. Great contrast and great form. Must try it! Nicely Bjorn!
Hank
This should be a song. It’s soooo beautiful and romantic. Your words sing and dance and croon.
A lilting musical poem
Did you say depressing thoughts? Granted, age precleds many memories form me these days, but memories of dancing in the leaves and kissing always were the happy days! Beautifully written…
Gorgeous poem 🙂
oh my I am so loving this! Bravo! Bravo!
I love the circular style like a dance itself beginning and ending with dancing in the falling leaves. Beautiful.
Once again…wonderful words Björn! Love the imagery of the falling leaves
I very much enjoyed the bounce and dance and love of this day to remember!
Once again you have brought the image of Autumn leaves to my feet and I danced in them, your words and imagery – very nice BR.
Love dancing in all that autumnal color…my favorite season…and you did it justice, Bjorn. Delightful!
Today waltz and kiss for who knows what tomorrow brings. Very nice and I love quatrains – I hope to find the time, but Wednesdays are such busy days for me. I love the phrase “darkness daylight thieves”
but I got a bit hooked up on it for some reason. I get it now, but would daylight-thieves help? It made me slow down and read a bit slower which is probably a good thing, so leave it as is – the hyphen probably doesn’t help. NICE job.
Oh, my, that is simply lovely, Bjorn. Thank you for writing this. I am in a contrary mind with my writing right now. I am on the failed first marriage strain.
Pamela
Beautiful work here Bjorn and thanks for letting me go dancing in the leaves. Pure magic my poet friend.
What a beautiful picture of autumn here – colors and romance. In some ways too, this poem reminded me of that movie Autumn in NY. 🙂
A lovely song here. k.
Bravo! Quaterns aren’t easy. You have to blend the line into four stanzas seamlessly. Well written, lyrical and beautiful.
Thank you.. it was my first quartern, but I have written triolets and villanelles before. refrain poetry is so great to work with…. my favourite is probably the rondeau.
