Lovers in lilacs by Marc Chagall
at summer solstice
dusk go seamlessly to dawn
dancing barefoot in the grass
in midnight shadows
making love in secrecy
nightingales sing serenade
Today in dVerse Form for All Samuel Peralta introduce the sedoka to us, poetry of Japanese origin with 577 577 syllable count. Tomorrow is midsummer nights eve and summer solstice, and up north we have almost endless daylight, and plenty of celebrations going on.

…loved this Bjorn… dancing barefoot in the grass… making love in secrecy… ah, what a great combo accompanied by versatile lines… i can read this in so many ways… smiles…
Midsummer in the far north is magic.. 🙂
They say magic things happen on that night. 🙂
Or did, when you grow older 🙂
Well… Yeah hahaha
This is most melodious!!
The form is supposed to be from old Japanese songs, so it does make sense 🙂
ha. i like going barefoot…its the only way to go…and making love in secret…to the sound of the nightengales…well, what better can summer be for…smiles. nicely done to form…
Midsummer is pure magic in my world. And solstice is now more or less
what a perfect play between summer, love, pic and image..my fam always says i’m the least romantic person they know…but in a way i am…sigh.. beautiful verse
At midsummer in Sweden everyone is a romantic.. always and utterly
dreamlike – wonderful write, Bjorn ~ M
Thank you 😉
A magical night ~ I love the second verse, nightingales serenading 🙂
I tried to be a little bit more romantic than usual 🙂
Delicious!
Thank you 🙂
I am headed north to Alaska day after tomorrow, and will soon travel under a sun that refuses to set; will be quite the adventure. Love the feel you infuse on the form, sir; sounds like a translation from the Japanese; really works well.
Thank you.. trying to write haiku daily might have made it a little simpler
What a lovely solstice poem! And love the Chagall.
Thank you.. for some reason Chagall fits midsummer
That’s the way to spend the shortest night 🙂
The furthest North I have been for the solstice is Ireland, and it was almost light round the clock. Not quite like yours.
I’m only in Stockholm… but a little more daylight than Ireland.
There are so many poems on solstice today and yours stands out among them.
Many thanks.. in Sweden solstice celebration is the biggest holiday of the year.
summer solstice, so apropos a theme for today !! Well Done !!
I couldn’t think about a better theme…(and I was not the only one)
Bjorn, this is so wonderfully sensual. I bet Sweden does celebrate solstice. I would love to visit your country…my husband is of Norwegian heritage. The Chagall painting couldn’t be a more perfect fit.
Norway celebrate as well. and this is the best time of the year… but cities are empty as everyone seek the countryside
Thanks for the heads up on this prompt! I enjoyed it and shamelessly imitated your take on the solstice since I was working on a haiku on that also. Sedoka A Summer Love Poem
I think it’s only natural.. midsummer is a great time… and in fact a lot of children are born around 20th of March,,,
love it B, and as usual adore your graphics/pics
Thank you Bonnie. A wonderful form to play with… and summer solstice bring up sweet memories…
So so so loved this such a wonderful poem and the Chagall is perfect – beautiful, Bjorn, really. K
Thank you 🙂
Absolutely lovely–and the way the two stanzas tie together with the dancing/serenade theme, just perfect!
Thank you 🙂 I enjoyed writing it…
A whole long day! What a choice! Many would have planned it right before the beginning of the year of what’s coming. Nicely Bjorn!
Hank
Oh we wait for midsummer all the time from winter solstice… a mere 6 months away..
a great way to celebrate the season!
Thank you 🙂
Quite beautiful with all the alliteration.
Thank you.. alliterations sometimes help …
That is a wonderful midsummer poem, so well-suited to the lyrical nature of the sedoka. I’m also enamored of the illustration you chose to accompany your work, a painting by Chagall that I’d never seen before. Beautiful work.
I actually found the Chagall painting after I had written the poem, and was so happy to find it…
Björn, what a beautiful tribute to the summer solstice. Which is today, isn’t it? Dancing barefoot in the grass, nightingales serenading while making love; what lovely thoughts. Beautifully rendered. -Mike
Summer solstice is “arround the 21st” which is today. This year it coincides with Midsummer nights eve… which is tonight. Certainly we will eat herring, new potatoes and strawberries.. Many will dance around the Maypole and many young people go out and make love under the trees later at night.. the nativity peaks around March 20… 🙂
you nailed it Bjorn Grat work.
Thank You Sam
Winter solstice for me, but I’d much prefer this summer depiction!
Best with winter solstice is that sun will slowly return.. the summer is nice, but there is a little sad also as it will gradually get darker….
Really a treat to read..
Thank you 🙂
A beautiful painting of lovers in lilac with matching sedoka…luscious poetry!
Thank you 🙂
Yes. Once upon a time in my life. Sigh. Seamless. Happy Solstice.
seems it’s all be said… i felt a hopefulness in the piece… maybe because there is so much hate in the world
Happy Solstice to you:) Love your verse and picture.
in midnight shadows
making love in secrecy
nightingales sing serenade
Those words indeed paint a wonderful image…enjoyable read.
I hope you are having a lovely celebration, plenty (but not too much) aquavit, and beautiful light. Lovely poem. k.
You’ve got to love those Nightingales! That thing in secrecy works for me too! Beauty of a write, Björn!
Very romantic! I love the Chagall too. 🙂
A beautiful seasonal piece Bjorn!
This certainly is magical. Nice.
masterfully crafted Bjorn, as always 🙂
Lovely words capturing the air of ancient mystery which accompanies the summer solstice–well done, Bjorn.
Actually not so far from autobiographical .. youthful once
Now I know where dancing barefoot in the grass leads to…like the feel and sound you’ve arranged, Bjorn.
This is absolutely beautiful..making love in secrecy..
Oh, isn’t that romantic? Lovely. 🙂
Dreamlike images…. loved this!!
That was a very honest, midsummer kind of lovesick poem, I want to be carried away. And dance barefooted in the garden. But Kelvin’s poem made me wary!
Very lovely,Björn!
