Forgetting news – dVerse Terza Rima

At forms for all in dVerse Tony wants us to write Terza Rima sonnets. Great choice, I love those nested rhymes, but they can be tricky.

Wood anemones in my garden

Wood anemones in my garden

I read in news today about the crime
a kidnapping and rape of teenage girls
molested and bereft of childhood prime
about starvation and of violent hurls
that caused demise of their unborn child
we can’t them compensate with gold or pearls
but still in warmth of spring, I am beguiled
return of sunshine in the month of May
as nature brings me joy and evenings mild
but does my joy of spring those girls betray?
I know disasters happens all the time
the news could make my life a dark dismay
in these days of May I forget what’s grime
enjoy the beauty of these days sublime

  1. nice….glenn butkis wrote on similar in his…and it is an interesting tension between our own joy and the pains of the world…surely it was horrible what happened to them…is it bad we have our own joy? i dunno but if we carried all the worlds pain what would come of us…that it moves us compassion and verse…is it enough…interesting questions out of this…and nice use of the form…

  2. really like the thoughts and questions in this björn.. as bri says, we can’t carry all the suffering of the world on our shoulders… def. sth. to chew here..

  3. Sometimes I see the grace of God in the fact that despite the horrors that we hear about too often, we are still surrounded by a planet that is basically beautiful. Once you get away from the city, it doesn’t take long for the natural environment to slow us down and soothe our pain.

I knew we were going to be writing terza rima sonnets a few weeks ago, when I commented on one of your other poems. I thought then that this would be right up your street – and it is.

Thanks for joining in, Bjorn … smiles

  4. I think that whenever we think we have something to complain about we should remember situations like this one where people REALLY have been through near hell. We may realize how trivial our complaints might be in the light of that. Yes, it is a beautiful May here too. I think we have to allow ourselves to experience this joy as well & hope that, as time goes on, these young women will also heal and know joy.

  5. rhymed tears
Love your field of the windflowers.
Did you ever have anemona Robinsonia come up? In lilac rather than white? I found some the other day.

  6. We need to see beyond the grime – not forgetting it is still there…but there is beauty and we need to hold onto it.

    Anna :o]

  7. Sometimes we feel guilty for our happiness when we know others suffer, but our own misery hardly helps them. I think the best we can do is enjoy the beauty of the day, and wish it was theirs!

  8. It’s the contrasts – between youthful spring and the loss of youth, between the fresh season and innocence crushed – that underscore the power of this poem’s theme. Carefully crafted, and well worth thinking about beyond the final strophe.

  9. You incorporate the current affairs of the day into a poem that struggles with the intensity of the crimes and the surrounding Joy of Spring. Such contrasts give the poem sharp contrasts of joy and sorrow.

  10. You nailed this form. Terrible news about those girls and I still have not forgotten that Austrian monster. Mary is right. Incidents like this make our own sufferings pale.Yet the weather is beautiful everywhere in the world it seems…we have been given gifts and the occasional spawn of Satan should not be allowed to contaminate our joy!

  11. Clearly we cannot take on and right all the wrongs of the world. But your attitude is a healthy one – to take pleasure in what we can enjoy and feel sympathy for what we can’t. A classic Terza Rima. Bravo!

  12. The positive is that the women will always remember this May as the time of their liberation. It’s impossible to imagine how he got away with keeping them prisoners for ten years. Fine write, Bjorn.

  13. Terrific take on the form, we can’t change the worlds pains and terrible things happen, we can have compassion and feel their pain deeply but in the end we owe it to ourselves and those around us to enjoy what we can in this world. A spring day is hard not to enjoy, great job on a complex poem!

  14. Ironical I find it while dwelling int he warmth of my cuppa, somewhere out there the spirit of living is frozen! Such is life, sometimes and we can only hope that it becomes better and give our two pence to it, if we can! very candid verses for the form.

  15. …a lot of bad news everywhere , everyday… and happiness is not at steak… so don’t let such negative vibes ruin your joy… we all must go on & not just stop on issues we know from the very beginning exist… yet we can’t still do anything about… smiles…
