Carpe Diem Special – Chèvrefeuille’s – ‘Under the willow’

Today in Carpe Diem once again Kristjaan challenge us to write a haiku inspired by one of his own. This wonderful haiku has inspired me to write a haibun below.

such a hot day
my shadow needs to cool down
under the willow

Midday Landscape by Pierre-Auguste Renoir

Midday Landscape by Pierre-Auguste Renoir

I was walking across the fields without a wind to cool me down. On the other side of the field I saw, almost like a mirage, a grove of lush trees. Despite the stillness of the day they seemed to move in air undulating from the heat.

Hoping for some cool shade, I was disappointed when entering the grove and finding no escape from the burning sun. I knew I would have to wait for the coolness of sunset.

shrinking shadows
in zenith sun inferno –
tree’s lacking shade

tree’s lacking shade
dry tears from crying willow
my shadow hides

my shadow hides
waiting for the coolness
of sunset

  1. i laughed cos again we seemed to have shared the same thought.lol and weird but your cascade is sooooo much better than mine. wonderful choice of words. and a beautiful intro.

  2. First of all, I really like your haibun. And I took the hot road too so was happy to see I wasn’t exactly off course. Could feel the heat wafting from your beautiful haiku.
