To be posted at dVerse where Tony wants us to write cinquain. I love cinquain as it merges the haiku/tanka way of composing short poetry with iambic poetry (if you want to do it that way)
In spring
the verdant world
will bloom for us again
but still the winter’s fingers grip
my throat

March 14, 2013

You never cease to amaze me.
🙂 hopefully in a good way
Of course!
Winter fingers grip your throat – my favourite line.
Ha, but less pleasant when it happens.
Exquisite words to a beautiful picture.
Thank you, it’s my garden today. 🙂
Lovely. Hope moored by reality.
Indeed… very much truth.
they grip my throat as well..we had snow over here yesterday and i was trying to find out all day where spring is hiding…smiles..nicely penned björn… i guess your winters are longer than ours over here
March is definitely a winter month here… I will go north in a few weeks to have beautiful arctinc winter,,, so I never complaín really
I guess the winter will linger for a few more days 🙂
More like weeks…
Bjorn–Loved the poem, and I sympathize. March is not ready to let us go yet here (although you are farther north than I!). Snowed here yesterday.
I know it’s a toigh month. So far not much of a lamb.
Nope–I called her a bitch about a week ago in a poem 😉
Wot: just the one?
Ah, I should spare you a little… after writing sonnets I thought a single one would do.
I am looking for spring to come very soon ~ Still, its very cold here…
Yes cold it is…
Ha, I could say the same about the world where I am! (But I did see a robin today!)
Here it’s still icy cold 🙂
oh nice….the grip on the throat in the end adds extra emphasis…come on spring before i choke out…smiles….we lost like 40 degrees over night…
Yes, that’s what it feels like. Despite clear skies. Winter
Winter does that to me, too. Fortunately, we’re in shorts here.
Oh that makes me envious
I liked how the poem turned. One moment imagining coming spring, and then….my throat!
That’s how returning winter is
…ah when you’re in cold you demand heat… when you’re in heat ypu demand cold… ha, too ironic but like the seasons these days our minds tend to be moody at times… changing unconditionally & unexpectedly… liked your demonstration of the current season in your place… smiles… enjoyed it.
We always want to have it right in between, swedes have a word for that. Lagom. It means right in between.
Gripping indeed,Björn.
Thank you 😉
You make winter sound like the brutish mugger that it is, the land and people held hostage in its grasp! 70’s this weekend here in Atlanta!!
Here it’s -10 C in the mornings (which bring it down to the tens….)
Good one. The poem reads so natural and smooth. And the sentiment is perfectly captured.
Thank you 🙂
I agree…the poem reads so easily, unbroken by the lines..and the finish is perfect;)
Thank you. This is one of my real favorite form
your throat at the end sunk this one in deeply. powerful short form!
Thank you 🙂
but still the winter’s fingers grip
my throat
Especially those really bad sore throats you get in the winter. One of many reminders of why we love spring and summer. Yeah I’m not a winter fan.
Enjoyed this but didn’t like the reminder of winter.
Ha, we all dislike winter in some ways, and now as daylight is returning it feels worse to some extent.
Beautifully expressed.
Thank you 🙂
Great action in this small gem.
Thank you 🙂
I thought I could rely on you Bjorn, and I wasn’t disappointed. This is exquisite – the images are really tight and so effective.
Thank you. I really enjoy cinquains, at one time I did several a day on twitter (they usually fit in 140 character limit)
It’ll be easier now that there are line breaks on Twitter 🙂
You are clearly from a colder clime. When you see the photos on my post, you’ll understand my perspective. In Tucson, it was 91 degrees fahrenheit today!
🙂 This morning it’s -10 C, but I recall the climate, after working a year in Phoenix.
Oh wow, powerful ending there. Made me swallow hard lol. I like the style you used here even with the form you’ve definitely created the feeling of a haiku 🙂
I tried the simple rule of combining two thoughts and turn them in the middle…
Awesome image of winter grabbing your throat. Our winters are mild here and I love them. The summer cooks me.
Thank you… we have had severe backlash of winter here recently…
Clean crisp clinch !
Thank you 🙂
Love the word “verdant” and the inference of being throttled by winter. I guess it is always so living in your part of the world..I can not bear the coldness for long. It would feel like death to me, too.
In reality it’s quite beautiful now. But cold it is.
Yes, there are stragglers. You have keen observation Bjorn!
Hank
🙂
Yes, by March it does feel like a tight grip! 🙂
Exactly… 4 month of winter is too long
Oh, yes, it does have a vicious grip when you least expect it! So economical, so perfect!
What a hold winter has on us, eh. Waiting to be released, almost desperate. In the meantime we make beautiful poetry, such as this cinquain.
Thank you 🙂
Nice garden..the only things missing are palms ,hibiscus, mango trees and a pool:) Enjoy your winter. Brrrrrrrr!
🙂
Throat? It grabs me by the whole network of nasal passages! I nicely captured image.
Ha.. 🙂
So gad I don’t libe anywhere it snows!
You nailed it, Bjorn! Beautiful write!
I have to tell you, though, it is in the 80s here this week. 🙂
Good for you.. here its more like 10 in the morning but going into low 30s by midday
so loved the power in this piece… great capture and done so well
Thank you so much
Those last two lines really emphasize how harsh winter can be… I love this poem!! I’m hoping Spring will arrive soon for those of you still covered in snow and ice.
Actually I think I’ve had enough now… But I don’t necessary dislike this part of the winter.
This is beautiful. I loved the way you wrote about winter. Winter just seems to have a hard time letting go. 🙂
Poor Winter — no one says anything nice about her. I love her.
winter’s fingers grip..powerful words..
