Līgo Haībun – true bravery

Līgo Haībun – challenge is the saying “fortune favors the brave”. I had big problem with this as I don’t really believe it’s true. Rather the opposite in fact. So let us take a closer look at bravery by hearing about Matt.

bravery

Fortune favors the brave” – Matt, born with a silver spoon in his mouth lived by that motto. As a kid he always ended up in hospital and had to be stitched up. But with his money and good looks he fell head over in heels in love with Jessica, and they soon got married and he knew that fortune favors the brave.

He got into football, and with his bravery he gained some fame, until his body couldn’t take more beating and the doctors explained that his limp was permanent.

But fortune favors the brave, and soon he had landed a job in finance where his bravery made him stockbroker of the year. But his bravery backfired and he lost a fortune for himself and the bank. The day he lost his job he came home to Jessica with new plans for adventures in his head. Sitting in the kitchen of a house, no longer theirs, she stared at him and said:

“I’m pregnant and I want a divorce, I’ve got the papers here”.

For the first time he understood the error in his motto and started to cry.

“I’m so afraid” he whimpered.

Jessica took his hand smiled and whispered:

“Fortune favors the brave. Let’s skip both your plans and that divorce”, and she tore the divorce papers to pieces.

  1. Excellent. A great story, very well written. And I agree with you, it does take much bravery to admit to personal fears (especially to oneself)!

  2. Thoughtful presentation of a different kind of bravery. Great haiku that really brought it together.
