Līgo Haībun this week has South America as prompt. This caused me a lot of trouble, and for once I avoided fiction and talked about myself. I have never been to South America, but this is probably the strongest impression that’s ever been implanted in me.

Aguirre’s Eyes
.
The Amazon rainforest, a slowly floating maze of rivers surrounded by impenetrable vegetation. Once you start traveling you are imprisoned on the water, with no way back and with only an unknown forward. You are surrounded by smell of decay and the sound of unknown beasts.

and mosquitos
Whenever I hear South America, I see for my inner eye, Klaus Kinski as Aguirre from Werner Herzog’s film. I saw it once on a grainy black and white television set in my parents cabin, while I waited for the house to get warm on a cold November night. My picture of the jungle is forever intermingled with the smell of a slightly damp and cold cabin.

Even in the grainy picture the jungle lunacy in his eyes can be seen. A disease so strong that only those that are crazy to start with can survive. But even for Aguirre his victory is limited, he only survive longer than any of his conquistador companions.

You create a great image,
Thank you 🙂
It sure is a place for adventures !!!
🙂
Interesting depiction of jungle fever, almost desirable to be so crazy. I like the mosquitos.
I like the poetic part of mosquitos not the real one’s
This is gripping, frightening and entrancing.
Thank you 🙂
I like how you’ve merged your different experiences together. And yes, the eyes are scary!
For once I didn’t write fiction. Those eyes and his acting was really one of the best I ever saw. And he was as scary as hus eyes in the movie..
These are really stellar haiku! And I’m a Herzog fan, so I appreciated them all the more. Great surprise with going from the damp cabin to the rain forest in the second one.
Thank you 🙂
Great

Björn this is wonderful. You don’t even need to know much about South America to create a masterpiece with your words. what an image you painted

Thank you, it was the only way I could make South America personal
