Today the Carpe Diem prompt is fado. I sit a listen to songs by Amelia Rodriguez to inspire me. Portugal is closely linked to the sea and therefore the image of a longing fisherman’s wife pops up in my mind. This picture can set the scene (taken on the west coast of Sweden)
empty horizon
longing for his arrival
fado in her heart
~~
singing wind
lamenting her fate
fado soul
~~
single gull
crying a fado
sailors lost

YOU surpassed yourself today….! Really….I think you may even have surpassed your own expectations….really fado fits haiku when done like this. Very, very nice. Each one.
Thank you. I got hooked on the idea of a seaman’s wife…. Seems to fit so well with fado
It REALLY does!
Long expanse of waves
Go to the widow maker
Never to return

Very true
My dad was a commercial fisherman, gone for 7-10 days at sea in all kinds of weather….My mom must have had a few tunes to sing…..
I spent my childhood summers in a (former) fishing village. and the tension of people at sea was still present
i love the lone seagull crying and the sailors who never made it home, paints such a sad picture perfect for the theme..
I think I hear seagulls in the songs. And seagulls is a symbol for the souls of seamen lost at sea.
Wow! Bjorn this set is … just gorgeous. I can feel the deep emotion in these haiku …
On the wind’s shoulder
Fado is hitch hiking to her
Who lost her sailor
Thank you for that great haiku. It adds even more to the imagery.
The fado for lost sailors is such a melancholy image!
Toothless Fadista
Thank you. Just like some fado.
This took my breath away…
Living on the coast of Maine, it is a frequent cry…
and you captured it so well.
“single gull
crying a fado
sailors lost ”
You captured the life of a sailors wife/family.
The seagull certainly sing s fado…
Peace,
Siggi
Thank you, yes I believe I can hear the sea-gull in the fado.
gulls circle above
my love crossing seven seas
in a sailor’s hand
You inspire me, Bjorn!
Brilliant. Those images are very stark indeed.
This is an exquisite set of haiku. That string of sadness, longing…the images formed and stayed on mind even after reading your lines.
Thank you. it is a stark image depicted by statues in all the ports in the world I believe.
Superb Bjorn, you’ve really captured Fado in every sense.
