My favorite recipe for glögg (Swedish mulled wine) is as follows
1 bottle of red wine,
cheap but with some body – I prefer Spanish
10 cl vodka (or white rum for variation)
10 g whole cinnamon (=4-5 pieces)
1 1/2 g cloves (about 20)
A small piece dried ginger
2 g seed of cardemom
(if you take pods increase slightly)
A piece of dried bitter orange-peel (pomerans)

3 dl white sugar (I usually take a little less)
1 tsp vanilla-sugar
raisin and almonds to serve

Crush the seed of cardemom in a mortar, break the cinnamon sticks. Put the spices in a jar and add the liqour. Let stand over night and the filter through for instance a coffee filter. Add the liqour to the wine and add sugar and vanilla-sugar. Heat it carefully and serve in small cups with raisins and almonds.
I usually make a bigger batch of spicy liquor and then mix the glögg right before serving.

Sounds amazing! I love making mulled cider in my crock pot, but I’ve never made wine before. Sounds perfect for holiday parties.
It is. The smell of glögg permeates our advent here in Sweden.

I was introduced to Glogg at the Christmas fairs in Frankfurt and I still love it now on a cold and wintry evening over Christmas – standing with a bag of hot chestnuts as well 🙂

It is 🙂 we drink it through December (advent) basically. But I can actually drink it more often.
Is there a trick to the heating so that it may be done without vaporizing too much of the alcohol?
Slowly, and with the lid on. Never let it boil. Then you save the alcohol well. Let the condensation on the lid drip back into the pot.

Oh, my gosh. My uncle makes glogg but I only had a small taste once as a kid. I thought it was awful. Haha. I’ll keep your recipe handy for when I get brave enough to try making some myself.

I did it once in the US, and I remember that some spices where harder to get than other… I especially remember that cardamom was hard to get, we had almost given up, when we had lunch at a middle-east sandwich place, and there they sold cinnamon…
I keep cardamom. It is a wonderful spice. My grandfather used to make a delicious cardamom bread. I need to hunt up that recipe…
