A bitter old man

I have written this poem with one stanza a day based on the #liblit prompt on twitter. I have rewritten it slightly for the purpose of getting a little bit more coherent story. Any feedback appreciated.
~~
The mirror showing staring eyes
So filled with tears and lethargy
An image to the worlds that cries
A man without his energy
~~
To everyone he is a clown
Amusement is ubiquitous
His pain behind, it is not known
A gap that is precipitous
~~
A pleasure that he once enjoyed
For children fabricating toys
Mephistic men he did avoid
Here are no longer any boys
~~
If this would be a fairy tale
He would just cease and abdicate
And spend his days just drinking ale
To afterlife not dedicate
~~
But yet again he meets a day
With effort that’s ineffable
As acrobat a simple play
Not more for self amenable
~~
At death, his diary was read
With entries that were rancorous
On final page it only said
“I should have been cantankerous”

  1. Perhaps, I am too shy a person to participate in groups, though, at times, I do try; but, I must say, you do some very interesting and fun work (or should I refer to it as “play”) with your twitter groups. I don’t think I quite have the hang of it, as of yet.
