A sun, still sleepy
fails to warm my skin, while
blanketing the meadows
a morning mist wet
my shoes, the grass, still green,
I raise my eyes and watch
the burning leaves of maple trees,
birch trees yellow
and oaks in brown.
In weeks to come
the trees undress
until, like filigree
just naked branches waits
for the first snow
to dress the yellow grass
and when October ends
we burn candles
on the graves.

Today Dora hosts dVerse poetics with a prompt on what October means to me. This is a period of large change here in Sweden. By the end of October I expect most of the leaves to be gone, but now in the beginning it is almost summer green everywhere.
You make us feel the morning mist and chill, see the “burning leaves” and anticipate October’s end, the coming snows. I felt I went on this morning walk with you and the photograph tops it all off. What a beautiful scene!
Thank you… yes it is a bit amazing to have a scene like that less than 10 km from downtown Stockholm…
I like these lines so much:
“In weeks to comethe trees undressuntil, like filigreejust naked branches waitsfor the first snow”
Changes of the seasons, changes of the mood. Your picture flows well with the poem so brilliantly. 🙂
Thank you Charlie… October is a time of drastic changes reallt
You welcome, Bjorn.
Yes, October is a time of change. I never really realized how much October has an impact on people during these changes of season. Now, I see it and feel it and understand it.
Thanks for the walk, Björn, I enjoyed it very much. I love those misty autumn mornings and love the use of colour in your poem. I especially enjoyed:
‘the trees undress
until, like filigree
just naked branches wait
for the first snow’.
Thank you October is a time for large change
10th October is the 33rd anniversary of David coming up to Norfolk to visit me for the first time.
that sleepy sun describes so well its lack of warmth and the darkness to come
It is really so… yes it is a time that is quite special
This is full of such lovely imagery, Björn. It may be one of my favorites of yours!
I thought autumn would be farther along where you are. It’s still very green here, too, but it will be stunning in a couple weeks.
It is changing rapidly now… but still quite green
Björn, brilliant interplay between vivid images and reflective themes – like a meditation on the cycles of life and the quiet that follows.💞
It is a long dark sleep to come
You must feel like hibernating!🛌
This is beautiful. I love the way you compare naked branches to filigree. The last three lines say goodbye to the green in a powerful way, like honoring a death. A meditative, moving poem.
I know what trees will look like in a few weeks…
Love this longing look at October and the passing season…
Looking back to what is coming just like every year
a marvelous autumnal ekphrasis, Bjorn ~
Thank you
A great poem, full of wonderful images. Love the ending!
I love the trees undressing and then the snow dressing the grass–as, no doubt, the trees have done before.
Naked branches awaiting snow…we’re almost there, here.
It’s so different here but your poem helps me reminisce.
October in Thailand just generally means that it stops raining. Not many deciduous trees here but the jungle will turn a little more yellow in the New Year once the ground dries up.
October in Australia was spring and marked by the amazing amount of purple flowers on the jacaranda trees.
Maybe I’ll try a real autumn again one day.
this is lovely
Love the idea of branches undressing themselves of leaves; perhaps in winter they will dress in white velvet. Lovely verse, Björn. Happy October!
Splendid on so many levels.
There is an ominous, foggy feeling here that goes well with fall and the coming of winter.
