In the cellars underneath the marble halls
among discarded manuscripts, catalogues
and inventories the ghosts of old librarians
haunts the crumbling vaults. While roaming
wild they sigh in dewey decimal, bemoaning
orders lost to dust and spider webs. They
call in vain for those above to join them in
the quest to release the wisdoms locked
in ciphered parchment quilled by witches,
necromancers and astrologers and maybe
one night a brave librarian will find a way
to spill the spells to save the world and
harvest what an ancient sorcerer foresaw.
Today Merill hosts dVerse with a prompt on harvest and haunting a theme that goes together with the season we are entering.

Ghastly (“they sigh in dewey decimal” 🙂) and alluring at the same time, the hidden mysteries of necromancers (shudder) and wisdoms awaiting a harvest!
Yes… every library has those vaults were the forbidden writing coexist with ghosts of dead librarian.
I would love to meet an old librarian ghost, Björn; there are plenty of old libraries that might be haunted. But I think I would be distracted by the discarded manuscripts. I love the thought of the ghosts sighing in Dewey Decimal.
I had fun thinking about ghosts of librarian, they must be fluent in the code of libraries.
Oh, I hope (and love the idea of) a brave librarian saving the world.
My favorite lines: “they sigh in dewey decimal, bemoaning
orders lost to dust and spider webs.”
Thank you… that is the language of librarians
You’re welcome. 😂
This was the library in my dream the other night – staffed by the dead and laughing at my attempts to read there with these dumbass living eyes. Well curated, tended and shelved!
It would be a dream that is close to nightmare.
See my latest post, “It’s Not My Library”
Stunning,,,In the cellars underneath the marble halls
among discarded manuscripts, catalogues
and inventories the ghosts of old librarians
haunts the crumbling vaults…what a way to set the scene…really enjoyed this stylistically as well, but really cinematographic, with that wonderful closing..rich, rich rich at every turn of the phrase.
Thank you, and the cinematic aspect worked as a prompt for AI to create the image as well…
Brav!!!a stunning meld of your old librarian and harvest moon haunts
much🤍love
The haunting aspect at least
I love these lines especially: “While roaming
wild they sigh in dewey decimal, bemoaning
orders lost to dust and spider webs.”
The language of librarians is special indeed.
I love the idea of the ghosts of librarians. So fun.
Nice use of harvest.
A very intriguing poem
Visually descriptive. I’ve always been interested in the idea that the ghost of past still absorb all the knowledge of books and spells. This one is really good brother. 🙂
I return to the library and librarian over and over….
Also, I imagined going into the library and everything around you quiet I would feel like something or a ghost staring at me. That feeling is scary but interesting at the same time.
Love ♡
If only…we need some past wisdom today and please save this world!!
I love that line ‘spill the spells to save the world’ – I may steal that at some point!
Thank you… it would be great to have those spells.
If there are ghosts anywhere, it’s in old libraries.
A stunning piece , Bjorn. Great use of the word, harvest. 🙂
I read and enjoyed Björn — thank you. 🙂✌🏼🫶🏼
Wonderful and so spooky. I love that your librarian is part of the haunting.
Those last 2 lines really have my curiosity going, Bjorn. What would the spell to save the world do, and what would the harvest be. The graphic is great. I’m sure they do exist and that they do call out to other librarians. My cousin is a librarian. I’ll have to ask her sometime if she hears them…
I love this, Björn! The idea of old librarians sighing “in Dewey decimal” made me chuckle. I join you in hoping that someday ” a brave librarian will find a way
to spill the spells to save the world”.
