by reaching sea-wards
horizon-wide he’s
the last ship to leave
brine-washed and alone
open book unread
every line’s a wave
from syllables blown
course laid plotted for
faraway lighthouse
to harbours unknown
library-ocean
mostly uncharted
he is explorer
with compass in hand
to lead us to shore

Alfred Stevens
Today Lilian hosts at dVerse with a prompt to write poems about the sea. Since I missunderstood the tableau prompt last week I decided to write one on a sea theme letting the sea be a metaphor for the library.

A library really is an ocean.🌊 I think I’m addicted to writing tableaux now.🙃
Yes it was a nice form when done correctly
Love this metaphorical use of the ocean here, Bjorn! I trust the Ancient Librarian might be a bit briny himself 🙂
Love this metaphorical use of the ocean here! I suspect the Ancient Librarian might have a bit of brine in his whiskers some day 🙂 I can see him reading the Ancient Mariner! 🙂
Or the old man and the sea
This is absolutely gorgeous, Bjorn! 💙 Wow! I especially admire this part;
“every line’s a wave
from syllables blown
course laid plotted for
faraway lighthouse
to harbours unknown.”
It is how the sea is a library
I love your library sea tableau, Björn! The whole poem is stunning, but these lines hooked me:
‘every line’s a wave
from syllables blown
course laid plotted for
faraway lighthouse
to harbours unknown’.
The library and the sea are connected I think.
Definitely.
Enjoyed your writing, Bjorn. I’ve linked your poem to my writing as the painting you’ve shared has provided inspiration for my piece, thank you. 🙂
Thank you… I know lighthouses too.
I love this poem – and the painting!
I remember the Librarian here previously…! As rich as ever, this verse here, and always merits a pause and second reading to catch all. V nicely done.
My librarian is one I have used for years…. maybe one day it will become a book of sorts.
I love your use of metaphor. The sea is indeed a library of offerings.
A beautiful poem Bjorn
superb metaphor and so fitting for the 5 syllable Tableau!!
“open book unread
every line’s a wave
from syllables blown”
Thank you, and fun to do the poem better to form

As Eliot said, old farts like us should be explorers. Glad to hear you’ve still piloting the sea of learning.
I am trying brother… I am trying
Explorers are ready to explore and do a lot more.
Wonders are in store!
Very nicely done, Bjorn.
Such a wonderful metaphor…every line’s a wave from syllables blown…love it! I started to write a Tableau but missed the deadline but I do like the form and you did so well with this one!
I love this Bjorn – always be an explorer into the unknown
Books take us on so many adventures. I guess in this modern age, videos do the same, but books take us there via our minds rather than our eyes and ears.
HI Bjorn, this is lovely. An ocean action poem.
A wonderful metaphor, Björn, it is one I live by in regard to reading…
