The past week autumn colours are falling to the ground, dead leaves sticking to the wet asphalt, leaving skeletal trees as black shadows against an overcast sky. From time to time a pale sun, lacking warmth, draws patterns in the wet soil. Next week we are transforming from daylight saving time to normal which means that evenings will be long and dark and when I go to bed I listen for the heavy footfalls of November in the wood behind our house.
The color of grey is the harbinger of winter.

Today Frank hosts dVerse haibun Monday and wants us to write of autumn/spring colors. Here the fall colour season is coming to an end and we are preparing for the long darkness.
October 23, 2023

We seem to be experiencing autumn at slightly different times, Björn; while I’m still waiting for colourful leaves, yours are on their way out. However, the ‘long darkness’ is on its way – the clocks are going back soon. I like the image you paint in the ‘skeletal trees as black shadows against an overcast sky’. I love the ‘last amber flare’.
Yes it is actually how it is right now. We are so happy that the house got fixed in time so we could take in the potted flowers that need to be indoors for winter.
Love the “heavy footfalls of November”. There hasn’t been a ton of change in the foliage here until now. They are finally changing.🍁
It has really changed a lot the last week
The heavy footfalls of November….yep…that time of skeleton trees and greyness as opposed to those bright crimsons, oranges and yellows of fall.
Still colors but we have passed its peak.
Bjorn, not sure if you’ve read or watched Game of Thrones, but one of the big things they say in it is, “Winter is Coming.” I got that same feeling of dread when I read your poem.
I don’t know the word ‘gret’. As I write this I’m wondering if the t is a typo in grey.
Rain at this time of year is so miserable!
Indeed a typo, it was supposed to be grey, thanks
I wasn’t sure. Gret sounds as though it could be a Norse word, for something grey and dismal.
Bravo!
Much💛love
Oh the “heavy footfalls of November” that sounds so ominous, it gave me a chill. A beautiful haiku to end. This really gives me a sense of where you live. Thank you 🙂
‘The last amber flare’ – brilliant!
A very good haibun. Fall changes are interesting as we step down the lattitudes. Our peak won’t hit untill November.
Today, I went for a walk and the sun was deceiving. I thought it much warmer than it actually was. Your words describe that feeling. The sun just doesn’t feel the same in autumn.
From time to time a pale sun, lacking warmth,
heavy footfalls of November in the woods… love the imagery and tone of that. Also the “amber flare” !
It feels heavy these days
i’ve always liked how the wet leaves stick to the concrete and leave a skeletal “print” behind when they dry up and blow away. reminds me of what you’ve written here. very beautiful, and i love the simplicity of the photo.
I love Autumn colours but dread the long dark nights, I felt this for you too …..
“a pale sun, lacking warmth, draws patterns in the wet soil. ” jumped out for me.
Ebullient imagery! You capture the essence of transition so well in this one!
My favorite line: “The color of grey is the harbinger of winter.”
Grey comes through very strongly in the mood. I get that weariness that you feel when days and days on end are wet and dreary. Very evocative piece.

Love your haibun Bjorn. Reminds Hank of days in Delft long ago when the maple leaves get thinner less lush and more brown toward winter.

Love “heavy footfalls of November”!
