The last of fall

The past week autumn colours are falling to the ground, dead leaves sticking to the wet asphalt, leaving skeletal trees as black shadows against an overcast sky. From time to time a pale sun, lacking warmth, draws patterns in the wet soil. Next week we are transforming from daylight saving time to normal which means that evenings will be long and dark and when I go to bed I listen for the heavy footfalls of November in the wood behind our house.

The color of grey is the harbinger of winter.

Today Frank hosts dVerse haibun Monday and wants us to write of autumn/spring colors. Here the fall colour season is coming to an end and we are preparing for the long darkness.

  1. We seem to be experiencing autumn at slightly different times, Björn; while I’m still waiting for colourful leaves, yours are on their way out. However, the ‘long darkness’ is on its way – the clocks are going back soon. I like the image you paint in the ‘skeletal trees as black shadows against an overcast sky’. I love the ‘last amber flare’.

  2. The heavy footfalls of November….yep…that time of skeleton trees and greyness as opposed to those bright crimsons, oranges and yellows of fall.

  3. Bjorn, not sure if you’ve read or watched Game of Thrones, but one of the big things they say in it is, “Winter is Coming.” I got that same feeling of dread when I read your poem.

  4. Oh the “heavy footfalls of November” that sounds so ominous, it gave me a chill. A beautiful haiku to end. This really gives me a sense of where you live. Thank you 🙂

  5. Today, I went for a walk and the sun was deceiving. I thought it much warmer than it actually was. Your words describe that feeling. The sun just doesn’t feel the same in autumn.

From time to time a pale sun, lacking warmth,

  6. i’ve always liked how the wet leaves stick to the concrete and leave a skeletal “print” behind when they dry up and blow away. reminds me of what you’ve written here. very beautiful, and i love the simplicity of the photo.

Love your haibun Bjorn. Reminds Hank of days in Delft long ago when the maple leaves get thinner less lush and more brown toward winter.
