I met an octopus the other day
as I was window-shopping for a cat
he asked me if I knew an other way
to where he’d buy a violet Stetson hat
I didn’t know – so I declared with glee
“in this autumn chill you’ll need some gloves
a velveteen umbrella and some tea
and shark-skin overcoats you’ll surely love”
He stared a little while (and looked confused)
and then he switched to talk in broken French
and said he felt so utterly abused
I smiled and handed him my allen wrench
he laughed and was so overjoyed and glad
a cheerful octopus is never bad!
Today at dVerse Tony teaches us to write nonsense poetry in the spirit of Lewis Carroll and other. I hope I meet the challenge with my Octopus meeting in the form of a sonnet (may Shakespeare cringe). I might have problems commenting tonight as my internet broke yesterday, but I will try to connect.

This really is fun and delightful, Bjorn. The picture made me smile too.
Bjorn, Funny and creative piece. I hope you get your internet back soon. 🙂 —Susan
it must take a long to shake hands though.
Never shake hands with an octopus:
it will hang on and hang on……..and hang on
and pull you down to drown
ha so trued….love me a cheerful octopus – and even more if he speaks french… very cool… love the pic as well… so did you draw him? if yes, you should become a professional octopus drawer – just saying…smiles
Great fun, Bjorn … smiles … and a sonnet to boot. Bravo!
Of course a sonnet to boot, brother, your poetic scope is boundless, as is your imagination. A fun piece that got a smile to replace my scowl today; thanks.
But what is the native language of the Octopus, that his French be so broken? I love this fun little sonnet – you did very well indeed with what you profess to be a really difficult prompt.
Multiple pairs of gloves, sharkskin overcoats and one velveteen umbrella for a beautiful lavendar octopus with turquoise lipstick and a violet Stetson hat? How tricked out can one be? Especially when wielding an allen wrench. Much fun, Bjorn.
I smiled and handed him my allen wrench
he laughed and was so overjoyed and glad
a cheerful octopus is never bad!
Who would have thought all it would take is an Allen wrench? I like this octopus nonsense.
A happy octopus is always happy
the reason why? Bozo the clown gave him a big hug
and some bizarre teeth.
I love your work my friend. This is perfect! 🙂
This poem is right up my ally…I love nonsense. In fact, you should stop by my page and read some of my nonsense too. 🙂
I wouldn’t have chosen violet, but it’s your octopus. : )
This is a wonderful bit of whimsy – and a sonnet, no less. That is pretty incredible.
ah…I’ve never seen an octopus smile…know at least I know what to do when next I cross paths with one to garner such a response.
gotta love an octopus in a stetson! such a fun write filled with wonderful nonsense
Hi Bjorn,
I thought your poem was such fun it made me want to play along..I hope you don’t mind..
it sure did bring a smile …delightful
I like this creativity. Like a fairy tale. Good job!
Cute octopus 🙂
I so adore this! Made me smile. “a cheerful octopus is never bad.” LOL.
Ah! Okay! Now let’s play game “Cheerful Octopus”: 2 teams, 8 hands.
Everyone finds something and then they come together and smile. No winners as the smile is contagious. ~ haha, just improvising.
You never know when an allan wrench will come in handy!
Such a nice fun read, Bjorn, smiles.
Love this tale, and the picture underneath.
