I know the beast within – sonnet

on summer sunlit trails let us embark
a day like this is blessed, it’s good to start
for new adventures – I’m in the mode

when suddenly in shade, our path goes dark
a swirling creature from my cauldron-heart
appears, misleads me cackling from our road

I know we’ve met before, I know his bark
I know that vice temptation is his art
but if I don’t succumb to this, he goads

he drains me easily – I lose my spark
he stings my confidence with poison darts
I know the deal we made, I know I’m owed

so when the sun is back I’ve lost our chart
the beast within and I will never part

I had to write a second entry to the wonderful pictures by Joel Robison. All of the sudden I remembered Sam Peralta’s entry on the trireme sonnet.. Fun to look back sometimes on those old entries.

Amazingly enough the prompt for Poetry Jam is Path, so I link it there too.

  1. Indeed. One needs to guard that beast well. Tame it so to speak. Since your other poem discussed LRRH, this could very well be a metaphor for Beauty and the Beast? ‘Fairy’ tales and psychology and dreams don’t always differentiate age or gender or type of being.

  2. no we will never be far from that beast within…but we learn how to live together….the deal we made line got me….and that beast does not always honor it….cool response bjorn

  3. I love the dark tale of the beast inside of us, tempting us and keeping us from starting on new adventures ~ The ending couplet sealed the whole poem for me ~ Thanks for the second share Bjorn ~

  4. The fight against the beast within, I think, is an ongoing battle. One meets him again and again, as he has lots of guises & uses various attempts to wear a person down! I like the form you used in this poem, Bjorn.

  5. I love the dark tale of the beast owning us and tempting us and stopping us from starting on new adventures ~ That ending couplet sealed the whole poem for me ~ Thanks for the second share Bjorn ~

  6. This complements the photo so well. We all go “dark” from time to time. The beast within sometimes wins. But the battle must go on. I like how you wrote of this Bjorn.

  7. A great sonnet to complement the photo! Sometimes our inner beast can be our most dangerous enemy. He knows us so well he can use very effective tricks to lure and catch us.

  8. The beast within can be persuasive, eh?
I, too, enjoy looking back at archived forms. Hope you have a great week, Bjorn.

  9. I see my comments didn’t come thru…let me try again :
Dark tale & being owned by the beast means you are always tempted~
I specially admire the ending couplet as it summed up the post for me ~ Lovely sonnet Bjorn ~

  10. Immediately I read this, I thought of ‘depression’ as the beast within. But one may interpret it in so many ways, and that is the beauty of poetry. Nice write, loved the sonnet form.

  11. the beast will always tempt but there’s the sunlight path too…the image & the sonnet both complement each other..thanks for linking up Björn 🙂

  12. I like what you have done here transforming the image with your words. this flows really nicely…I like the “cauldron-heart.” to be entwined with such a beast must make for some interesting (& rough) adventures.

I try to reciprocate all comments. If you want me to visit a particular post, please direct me directly to that post.
