Striations in the crust

Kerosene lantern guides my way
as end is near to waning day
I carve striations in the crust
on skis toward remote chalet

and guided by the moon I trust
in mountain paths that are my lust
twas far to go, but soon I’m there
to stay and eat is now a must

inside I will for blisters care
there in the hissing lantern’s glare
I’ll find a bunk-bed for the night
and for my mountain days prepare

but yet I’m here, the moon is bright
and I can see the guiding light
my mountain ways are always right
my mountain ways are always right

Linked to Real Toads, where we write poetry inspired by Roberg Frost. This one takes my own feeling from “Stopping by woods on a snow evening” – I have tried to keep rhymes and meter fairly correct.

  1. “guided by the moon I trust” – gives a very intimate feel to your relationship with the moon…a strong friendship developed between the traveler and the celestial night-light.

  2. I love the sense of both freedom and purpose in this Bjorn–I can see that mountain, and the beauty of the the immaculate snow being carved by your presence, yet not altered, only enhanced to the mind, just as the cold both carves and enhances you and your experience of it. The repetition at the end concludes the piece perfectly.

  3. A great sense of Frost here–and I love the skiing imagery and words–I can feel those blisters! Very nice and the repetition at the end so Frostian and, as Hedge, says, perfect here. k.

  4. You have captured the essence of Frost’s voice in this piece. And the poem itself, the message, resonates with truth and authenticity of experience.

  5. I love the rhyme scheme of “Stopping by woods..” and you have show much skill in applying it to your own particular journey in your personal context. Lovely work.
