Advent’s flickering candle-light reflects
in the blackness of enigmatic pools
we sing threnodies of unity that’s gone
and untie our ribbon’s velvet hold
Not for us is peace on earth,
Nor for us, goodwill to all.
Our hopes, our prayers, the love we shared
But needles strewn ‘neath rootless trees.
An aromatic collection, secreted over years,
The sharp comment, and pointed silence..
Armoury of barbs to hurt each other
How apt to hide them in yuletide wreath.
Damn this coldness and sharpness overwhelming,
Damn the memories and traditions that hurt
Longer nights, darker souls and spirit sought among
Some lonely candle flames that barely warm and barely light.
Time corrupts faith that once did burn bright
Age shoots down the soaring psyche of yore.
In winter dark our offspring sings
Its gleeful carol to our bitter dirge.
