Keepsake

The sand it oozes through unshackled toes,
As to the sea I go, the sea I go.
Oblivious to children’s cries, I dip
My head in the amniotic expanse.

A return, to what, I wonder, briefly,
Then pause the wondering, forcibly,
Hold my breath, softly, let go, softly.
Colors swirl, I swim, then gasp, audibly.

My breath taken as I am by the current,
Disempowered but free and surrendered.
Alone in vastness yet belonging,
To become? To be gone? To return?

Coupled with the wave I am weightless
I’m unfettered. Alive. Unbound.
Released into space for an instant
no longer trapped in shame and stagnancy.

Eyes closed, blinded by the sun
My thoughts roam free with the spray
An epiphany washes over me like the waves
I’m drifting, but no longer adrift.

I save this keepsake in my memory
My dance in waves, the taste of salt
