A picture prompt for Līgo Haībun got me inspired to write about wolves.
Relentlessly the pack of wolves hunt the young elk through the winter forest. With a temperature far below zero he sinks deep with each stride, while the wolves take turns staying as close as possible. He is a strong young animal, and with his sharp antler he could still hurt the wolves if they got close enough. The alpha female is experienced and knows well, that it’s always just a matter of time. So they keep their distance while the young elk rushes through the silent forest, gradually getting weaker. It can take hours or sometimes even days, but the pack always win in the end. By nightfall the hunt will be over and the alpha female will be able to get her pack the food they desperately need.
In the bright morning sunlight only the crimson snow tells the story of the hunt across the winter taiga.
persistent pack
driven by their hunger
