Winter kigo on Carpe Diem prompt is year end market ( toshi no ichi). Had no good picture for these market (go to Kristjaan’s page to read more). So I searched for woodblock prints, and found this wonderful one of music clowns at the toshi no ichi.
year end market
happy music from the clowns
tears behind their mask
~~
market joyful dance
noisy beat from drumming hands
children eating sweets
~~
payment to the clowns
meager dinner afterwards
solitude again

You are on a roll Bjorn!
🙂 thanks pirate
Love the second one most of all.
Thank you
Love these haiku Bjorn , and the woodblock you found.
Thanks, the woodblock was a nice find.
Oh! that made me sad, why joy and sorrow coexist!
Ever since I was a kid I’ve found difficulties laughing at clown, and suspected they are quite sorrowful..
A little Toshi No Ichi story in just a few words, nice woodblock … a joyful imagery, and than the sad ending for the clowns. Awesome, well balanced.
Thank you. It was easy once I found the print.
Great wood block print and your haiku speaks of a wonderful cultural celebration ~

Many of us are weeping behind the masks we wear…
